A friend has just received this text from his medical centre:

"The Ministry of Health has advised that as from tomorrow 23rd March, all GP and Nurse consultations will be done via phone. Please DO NOT come into the Medical Practice. Your GP will phone you at your booked appointment time to consult with you. Please ignore any appointment reminders. Normal fees will apply. Thank you for your cooperation. Kopata Medical Centre."

This was a bit unexpected, but I suppose you can't be too careful these days?

Don't quarrel! We are human beings and more fragile than we thought. But we are not defenseless! You can do the simplest thing that should be obvious to everyone without expert advice: deprives the virus of the possibility of spreading. Our human instinct has always been to move closer together when in danger. This time it's the other way around and that's what makes it so difficult to understand.

Just received via Manage My Health at 20:07 tonight

KEY MESSAGE: Mount Medical Centre needs to be a safe space for doctors to treat sick patients, not corona virus patients.

All booked consultations will be PHONE consultations. Manage my Health appointments for flu only.

Do not come in person unless you have permission from a staff member by phone.

We understand how inconvenient this is, so please call reception and we will do our best to accommodate you. We will call you at the appointed booking time. Please allow some flexibility here, we will do our best.

Further Information to keep everyone safe
NO ONE will enter our service by the front door.
All patients will be screened first, before being able to enter by the back door.
If you have an acute respiratory illness, and have been assessed as needing to be seen by a Doctor, you will be examined in a special area outside our surgery.

FLU INJECTIONS will be given in a designated area just outside our front entrance. You must have an appointment for these.
We only have flu injections at present for those who are vulnerable : age over 65 and comorbid medical conditions.

PLEASE ENSURE we have your correct contact details, both phone and email.
Charges apply and will be made via an emailed invoice. Please pay promptly so we can maintain our service to you for the duration of the pandemic.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as we rapidly evolve to meet your needs and keep you safe. Please help us by communicating this message to family or friends without mobile phones or internet.

Getting service:
Please do not arrive at Mount Medical Centre without calling beforehand. 5753073 When you call you will speak to a staff member who will help you with the following:
• If you need a script, we’ll fax it directly to your pharmacy for you to pick up.
• We will NOT prescribe for more than 3 months for safety reasons.
• If you are concerned about your symptoms, we’ll be able to reassure you with the most-up-to-date information about what you need to do.
• If your situation is not urgent. We’ll tell you what follow-up is needed and by when.
• You can request regular prescriptions via ManageMyHealth, (please ring reception if you wish to register for this)

IF YOU’RE GIVEN AN ON-SITE APPOINTMENT
• You will need to sanitise your hands when you enter our building. The front entry will be closed for on-site appointments, please go to the rear of the building.
• Your appointment will be 5-10 minutes to limit the risk to our medical team, yourself and other patients
• We ask you to minimise people coming into the practice with you
We understand that you may be feeling a great deal of unease and we want to reassure we’re doing everything we can do so we all stay safe.

Manage My Health
At present we have suspended the ability to make appointments online apart from the flu clinic which we encourage you to book online for.

Covid 19 Information
We encourage you to follow Ministry of Health guidelines:
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Don’t touch your face and no handshakes, hugs and hongi’s.
If you are unwell, please stay away from work or social gatherings until you have been well for 48 hours.

Totally agree and to add to what you said Government has a responsibility to make sure all Kiwis are safe which is why the kiwis who are coming in should be scanned properly, self isolated or quarantined accordingly in order to make sure there is no community spread. They shouldn’t just land at the airport without any help or guidance or any checks and then go straight into community which increases the chances of putting a lot more people at risk of getting it.

Looking at the new cases, it seems some travel on domestic flights after arriving in NZ. Aren't locals also on those domestic flights? I thought when they arrived in NZ, they were supposed to then travel in a private car to their place of self isolation, to reduce the risk of anyone getting it if they are infected?

when the govt talks to the nation for 5 mins every day, it seems they leave it there. doesn't seem to be any follow up. head no talk to tail.

tourist not isolating - police called - not their problem

people arriving at airport - no checks

people told to physical distance - nobody cares and nobody enforces! (as per the full bars, and the student parties)

in other places the health minister is on TV a few hours a day talking to the nation. health minister also happens to be a qualified doctor. (singapore)

hio77: I'm shocked at how passive some folk are.

My grandparents are having a family friend fly up. A major risk in itself. But they are also going out every day for coffees etc like it's a normal day.

They both are in that high risk bracket. Not just because of age. I've personally been avoiding visiting them due to taking public transport and thus being quite plausible to get it through community transmission.
I'm shocked. I've got no idea what to even say to make it sink in :/

from what i've observed people get their information and advice on social media, and then do whatever they feel like.

wonder why lockdown in china works, lockdown in italy did f all.

Some people are not listening to government speeches on TV - they don't watch TV (except for Netflix). Some people don't read newspapers or check digital media publications. Some people are alienated if it's not on their Twitter feeds or Facebook (God save us).

I had a lesson in how easy this virus is to catch today.

As you will know, someone in the Wairarapa has it. Turns out, that person is a "front line staff member" (how's that for meaningless?) at Carterton District Council.

Where was Yours Truly on Monday last? Oh yes - CDC ordering a LIM report.

AFAIK I did not see the man - I spoke only to two ladies whilst there, both across the counter. They could have been chatting or even hugging him earlier in the day though! For all I know, one of them might even be married to him.

It's been a week and I feel fine (thanks for asking, much obliged guv) but I knew none of this until today - so how many people might I have seen in the last week that I could have avoided seeing had I known all this?

Like our friend and colleague @MikeB4, I have medical challenges which, whilst less impacting than his are (inferred from what he has shared here), are nevertheless not the kind of things that give you a head start in beating something like this if you are unlucky enough to catch it.

It's just too easy to catch it or pass it on.

I am sure I am fine (this time..) but do please all take it seriously if they tell us to stay home and avoid people where possible. This sh*t is real - 4000 deaths in Italy at a rate of 1 person every 2 minutes according to The Times this morning. We do not want that here. 4000 deaths in NZ would be more than enough that each and every one of us here fortunate enough not to be one of those 4000 would absolutely know at least one person who was less fortunate.

We must remember not to panic as the vast majority of us who get this virus will either recover or have it and not know about it. Italy has almost 61 million people living there, so the number of deaths is far from satisfactory, but quite small. Its all about protecting the health system from an influx and protecting our vulnerable.

My sister can't come up for her birthday next week because some selfish retards at her work came back into the country and chose not to self-isolate.

My dad is going to self-isolate because the selfish prick who owns the local country pub where he lives came back into the country and also chose not to isolate himself.

Our living room (here in Hamburg) has become part of a satellite crisis management team since my wife is in charge and on duty from home for regional hospitals backing her doctor colleagues and her staff at their locations. So far, after first chaos two weeks ago, everything is going fine now except the numbers of patients starts to grow. We're happy that she didn't wait in the meantime for the health autorities and did (from medical standpoint) the right things. Now it's up to the health authorities to organize needed masks and consumables before it will run out of supply.

Despite this we heart in Serbia imprisoned guys are sewing masks as much as they can ... 👍
