deport him to Vanuatu (confirming he does not have the virus) and lock him up in the central prison in the container cell.

I'd donate $100 for the above.

Easy, flag his passport and don't allow him to fly NZ routes anymore. Ever.

I'd just revoke his passport.

There are layoffs in the Aviation Industry, his should be at the top of the list.

Police will ramp up intervention in public areas. The have legal power under the Health Act. Lets hope that and I hope the PM gives a stern  warning today. Or else we reduce the gathering limit to a very small number, like 5

I don't know what other community groups are doing but a week ago we started to respond by shutting down our activities and asking our older members to self isolate.

Of course this is going to cause problems because of the isolation.

So, I setup a Google form to identify our community at risk, and to setup lines of support, collate available resources etc, and this has been emailed to all our membership, and we have asked them to forward it on to other vulnerable people.  Based on the data we can then send that off to the appropriate groups to manage.  This is similar to the groups and self support cells that formed in Auckland in the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.

As the old saying goes, god only helps those who help themselves (and maybe those who keep paying their tithes! )

The crowd is also the collective wisdom of govts worldwide; we can see which ones have succeeded and which have not.

The collective wisdom of governments worldwide have gone down the toilet in this instance. The only governments who can be trusted and appears to truly have a handle on this disease are the HK, Taiwan and Singaporean governments only. The NZ government is comparably doing better than most western world countries but is still largely under the illusion that dropkick Joe/Jo Public can be trusted. More than enough people are flouting the rules and we aren't decisive enough in dealing with them (it doesn't **** matter whether they are the minority or not -- there's already evidence of enough of them to be very dangerous). They need to have their liberty restrained far beyond a cushy 14 days inside a house somewhere under police guard. I would go as far as saying mandatory 1 year sentence is in order.

We might have to rethink how to use technology to keep in touch with family. A lot of peope are on Facebook, many use smartphones to chat (text/audio/video calls). Many will be like my parents-in-law - they have smartphones but anything beyond placing or answering a call is a mystery. Initiating a video call using Messenger is a battle.

I have received two Facebook Portal devices here for review. Installed one at home and one at in-laws. They can easily touch the 10" screen, select a contact from the favourites or all their Facebook contacts and place a voice or video call. They are using it now to keep in touch with their three kids - one is in Melbourne and she won't be making back to New Zealand for some time now, the other in Hawkes Bay and my wife here in Wellington.

Another thing is that it took sometime for them to understand the seriousness of the situation. Being over 70s, with a history of cancer, they still though "stay at home" meant they could still go out for the weekly cards night, to the supermarket and golf course during the weekend. It took a lot of convincing them this is not ok.

Take care of your older people. And use technology wherever possible - a smartphone, a video device, anything to keep in contact.

The USA were aware of the disease outbreak from early January if not earlier.  Their govt assumed that they were safe because they didn't see any cases (because they never tested to see if they had any cases either), and locked the border to China.  That appeared to give them a 2 month hiatus before infection exploded.

NZ has had a longer gap because of fewer contacts with China and so our infections have come through Iran, Italy, Australia etc.  It's just a matter of time before it explodes in our complacent community as well.

I couldn’t see where it states nationality or airline in the linked article. It would be handy to know rather than tarring an entire professional group. Airline (and shipping) crews are treated as ‘trusted’ so that vital links can be maintained. The requirements by airlines for their crew are quite prescriptive and this dickhead has stepped outside even the most liberal of those.
The government has powers to detain and deport, maybe ban the organisation he works for as well. I have friends that work for airlines and they take their responsibilities very seriously.

If this guy is willing to knowingly treat public health in this way, would you really want to be travelling as a passenger in an aircraft he’s flying?

Many of our "imported" cases in NZ and in Australia came from the USA.

The mirage of the 2 month hiatus in the USA can be summed up by a few words - lies, denial, incompetence, and hubris.

Don't confuse "Not panicking" with "Complacent".

As someone who would not do well if I were infected I am

Not panicking

Not panic shopping

Social distancing

etc

And all this while we have no kitchen, the units hopefully get installed tomorrow, the bench top will be 10-15 working days away so I may be making some out of Meltica sheets if things go down hill.

And I am STILL not panicking .

If you're getting a stone, real or synthetic, benchtop that does indeed take 10 working days ( in Wellington ).

Because it might not appear as things worsen, I personally have asked for a plywood benchtop as that can last the distance.  But then the plumber has to install a temporary tap, install back in the old sink, and the gas fitter is too busy and won't install because the splashback isn't in yet etc.

So, I got a temporary single electric top from HN.

was panicking when the tiler said the electrician had to come to move the power point before he water proofed the floor, the electrician said maybe next week, the builder said he was too busy to replace the area of rot in the flooring which had to be done before water proofing, and the plumber was not able to come back to fix the leaking tap points that he had just moved.
