Can't say I blame them for that reaction. As well as risk of facilitating community spread, teachers are people with families etc and will be concerned about catching the disease and bringing it home. I'm not sure if the science - how the disease may transfer amongst children - is well understood. Erring on the safe side would be smart IMO.

The Teaching Council has called for all schools and daycare centres to shut down immediately to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday, Teaching Council chief executive Lesley Hoskin made the call which she said was on behalf of 130,000 teachers.

The closure should be immediate, she said.

I have received two Facebook Portal devices here for review. Installed one at home and one at in-laws. They can easily touch the 10" screen, select a contact from the favourites or all their Facebook contacts and place a voice or video call. They are using it now to keep in touch with their three kids - one is in Melbourne and she won't be making back to New Zealand for some time now, the other in Hawkes Bay and my wife here in Wellington.

Is there a way to overlay a Thunderbirds-style video calling API for this?

I shudder to think what effect Simon Bridges or Paula Bennett would have.

I expect "the party of business" would have avoided anything that might affect businesses in any significant way for far too long.

I dont have faith that they would have brought in boarder restrictions at as early stage as current government.

I certainly dont recall any national mp calling for boarders to be closed before they were.

From this I conclude they wouldnt have and I fear we would have less restrictions than currently.

Peter Gluckman is calling for a full lock down, good on him for speaking up.

I agree with him. If we go for a lockdown now for 4-8 weeks now, i'm fairly confident we can stamp this thing out.

Not saying it will be easy but better than the alternative.

Take the politics and the usual China bashing out and think for a moment: notice how well equipped and prepared they are and, more importantly, the steps they go to in order to support (e.g. dropping off supplies) self-isolators and to enforce self-isolation (i.e. the door device). One of the most idiotic things about the western response has been the obsession with relying on individual compliance/responsibility to solve a community crisis.

There is a suburb in Sydney called Campbelltown, during 80's & 90's it had the dubious distinction of having the most take away joints in Australia. I wonder how they will fear.

But this brings up a more serious discussion. We are 75 years post WW2 so roughly 3-4 generations post. I'm 65 so was lucky to be raised during the boom of the 50's & 60's. My parents and G/parents however had a veggie garden before and during the war. During and post the war and even during my formative years we cooked cheap cuts of meat; liver, kidney, brains, tripe, bread & butter pudding for the stale bread etc, home brew, hand-me downs & home made clothes and when I was sent to the relatives farm, early 60's in Taranaki, we had a lamb, mutton or hogget hanging in the pump house once a month and we had a house cow.

Today's children and their parents, born and raised in this country, by and large, do not know deprivations, hardships and DIY in all aspects of daily living. (and please I do not want to get into a social welfare debate over this).

So for those that are so used to going out to eat 2, 3 or 4 times a week, plus take aways all the time. cause they are too lazy to cook, do not know how to cook, too busy to cook, too tired to cook, do not know how to shop to cook etc, well they are going to have to learn mighty quickly.

By the way I learnt to cook from the Edmonds Cookery Book (1978 centennial ed) plus 1992 ed, and the 1994 Edmonds Microwave Cookery Books, along with 1.5m shelf of cook books including the modern day edition of "Aunt Daisy's" famous cook book written by her daughter. What a treasure trove it is too.

I am not saying we will be reverting back to pre & post WW2 & 1 times, with food stamps & ration books etc, but just that we are all going to have to be more self sufficient.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

BBC News - Coronavirus: Germany tightens curbs and bans meetings of more than two

today

Germany has expanded curbs on social interactions to try to contain the coronavirus outbreak, banning public gatherings of more than two people.

In a televised address, Chancellor Angela Merkel said "our own behaviour" was the "most effective way" of slowing the rate of infection.

The measures included closing hair, beauty and massage studios. Other non-essential shops had already been shut.

Shortly afterwards, Mrs Merkel's office said she would quarantine herself.

A doctor who vaccinated her on Friday against pneumococcus, a pneumonia-causing bacteria, had tested positive for coronavirus.

The chancellor, 65, will be tested regularly in the next few days and work from home ...

Have many fond memories of my Grandfather cooking these, in times of shortages, I'm sure there won't be a rush for Lambs Fry 😀

I think Jacinda's next update is at 1:30. So MoH will tell us how the numbers are going followed straight away by JA telling us what the government is going to do next.

On Saturday after her first address I predicted level 3 by Wednesday, I still stand by my prediction and wouldn't be at all surprised to see level 4 before the week is out. Just my own opinion.
