We know that mobile networks are under stress and voice calls are failing. This is the response from Spark:

Following the Prime Minister’s COVID-19 announcement today telecommunications providers experienced call volumes beyond any level of calling ever seen in New Zealand to date.

This is creating significant congestion for voice calling at an industry-wide level.

We are working collaboratively to rectify the issue with urgency.

While broadband has seen increases, these have been within manageable volumes. So in the meantime New Zealanders are encouraged to use internet-based calling options such as Skype or Facetime or text applications like WhatsApp.

That's what China did, every store has a gate guarded by security, and everyone goes into the store has to wear mask and wait in a queue until someone comes out.

Also I think it is easier for China to force people stay home since they all living in different housing estate that has wall/gates that already guarded by estate's own security, no one can get out the estate without going through the main gate. It is enforced only 1 person in a family can leave the estate every X days for sole grocery shopping purpose. But it was blamed heavily by western media for against human rights, so it is going to be interesting how media says later on.

The New Zealand Ministry of Health has raised the country to Alert Level 3: Restrict and stated it would raise the system to its highest level, Alert Level 4: Eliminate, beginning Wednesday, March 25 for four weeks. I heard on the radio that at level 4, courier delivery people are not allowed to work, and if they are forced to by their employers, they can report them to the police. If that is the case, I guess one can shop online all they can, but deliveries will only be made after things are back to normal.

Well, apparently what I heard on the radio was incorrect. According to official government rule "“Essential services will remain open, such as supermarkets, banks, GPs, pharmacies, service stations, couriers and other important frontline service providers. "

I wonder if couriers will ban person to person packages due to the risk factor? Maybe just allow commercial accounts only or something.

If you use pass the parcel or trademes service which links to couriers online, you can just leave the parcel by the front door to collect, and you just arrange the pickup online. But I have noticed for the last few weeks, couriers can take days to pickup goods. When delivering, they can also just drop it off. Potentially couriers shoul dbe able to get around without person to person contact, except maybe when getting food or some petrol stations, that are not self service.

I picked a silly time slot for my new world delivery, between 5-7pm so quite a few items are out of stock e.g. milk as presumably it's all been panic bought.. sigh

I think that'll be the last time I use delivery, as their system is not really setup well to handle the increase in demand + strain that's being put on the store itself

Whoever you listened to is misinformed. NZ Post and Courier services are still operational as they are classed as an essential service.

Now whether they put their own restrictions on who they pick up from and deliver to is another question.

If I run a business from home and put a parcel on my doorstep for pickup by the courier, there is no human interaction required.

I have been putting off going to the pharmacy as it normally busy, and is probably very busy at the moment, and I don't live too far from from one of the two probable CT cases. Will do it in the next week or so when it has calmed down more. But if they do move to doing deliveries, that would be a bonus. .

Only the virus particles that you coughed/sneezed onto the package before you left it, or that the courier deposited before they dropped it off.

It's not as safe as you make it sound.

People get horny they will find a way lol, will just be more talking over phone/facetime before you trust someone to meet them at someones home.
