So on my morning walk this morning I found a moderately-sized spec build development had a decent number of workers (roofers, builders) already at work today; I really can't see how they meet the definition of 'essential services', given the homes they're working on are in a relatively early stage:

  • Any entity involved in building and construction related to essential services and critical infrastructure
  • Any entity involved in building and construction required immediately to maintain human health and safety at home or work
  • Any entity that performs or is involved in building and resource consenting necessary for the above purposes

This comes across as a company trying to desperately to minimise losses - while I get that from the business's perspective, equally it's setting a bad example to the wider population. I wonder how (or even if) this kind of flouting will be policed?

I also noticed a coffee cart was still operating; assume that's covered by JA's comment that "takeaway services must move to close their operations", from which I read that they'll need to be closed by the time we hit level 4.

I can't believe the going rate for a 3 bed 2 bath new build in Palmerston North is $725k! You can pay that in some parts of Auckland.

There's a new apartment development due for completion later this year not far from me, I could see the reflection of the crane moving on a window this morning so looks like they are still going too. I highly doubt they will be tomorrow and something worth reporting if so.

bmt:Bulletproof isn't really the right word to be using. The mortality rate for younger people is MUCH lower. They can take the bullet and survive, whereas oldies are much less likely.

Do they know what the long term damage to the lungs and other parts of the body are? What are the long term effects?

Hibino:

I've already missed the boat of masks/hand sanitizer/disinfectants which are all out one or two months ago while "everything is under control", "world class health system", "enough for everyone", I do feel I need to be over-prepared from now on.

All those things are still true.

We are taking steps to ensure they don't become "untrue".

What the heck...how is this even allowed? shouldn't they be moving to shutdown by midnight tomorrow?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120513172/coronavirus-lockdown-dominos-offers-one-free-pizza-meal-delivered-per-week-for-over-70s?

There are apartments in Auckland (and probably elsewhere in NZ) with no kitchen.
To eat a hot meal you have to go out or order a delivery.

If you are wondering why people would live in an apartment with no kitchen, you need to look at how successive governments failed to take action to make home ownership more affordable and failed to take action to make house speculation less profitable.

So now there are people living in small apartments with no kitchens who are being told to stay at home in their small apartments for 4 weeks and they will want to eat some hot meals.

The Warehouse will be open in the lockdown as they sell some groceries. It will become a hangout place, meet up with friends and rellies, get out of the house for a few hours. Bit of a loose end there IMO

Agreed. When going to the supermarket go by yourself, do not take the family. Get in and out without fuss. Do not linger. Try to elect one person that will always go out to run these kinds of errands. This reduces the possible contact list. If you stop to chat at The Warehouse you are doing it wrong.

A message to younger (Than me) people out there:

(From Stuff)

"The latest NSW Health coronavirus statistics released on Monday showed people in their 30s account for more COVID-19 cases than any other age group in NSW (131), followed by people in their 20s and 40s (125 and 116 cases respectively)."

You are NOT bulletproof!

Are they deliberately socializing because of an ill-based (pun intended) idea that they are immune?

Someone replied, but to reinforce: you must remain at home with the people you live with or the people you were when the Level 4 starts. You are not to go around "visiting" family, friends. You are allowed to go to the supermarket to buy food or to a petrol station to buy petrol.

Is it clear? Or do you think it is too hard on you?

The reality is that it indeed could be very hard on some; my mother's 85, lives alone, and directly suffers (in a depressive sense) from a lack of human contact. Facetime will offer some respite from this, if we can get her using it sucessfully, but I have lingering concerns.

If we were able to simply drive to outside her house and converse from some distance that'll probably be a significant help for her, so a pity that's not going to be an option.

My sister is dropping groceries of to my mum each week as needed. Will keep her distance and have a good chat.

A single electric hot plate costs about $70 from HNs.  Get a single pot and you're basically good to go.

They provide Food, they are essential services.

They are not essential. Bars, cafes, restaurants and takeaways serviced are to close this Wed 11.59pm. Food suppliers are supermarkets and meal kit services (My Food Bag, Hello Fresh, etc).

Hibino:

[No one can buy masks/hand sanitizer/disinfectants now, which are required to go out for grocery shopping. This is not enough for everyone.

You can wear dish washing gloves, and you can put a t-shirt over your head, cut out eye holes for sunnies, and breath through the T-shirt. 100% cotton gives 60% of the performance of a surgical mask.   if you're really worried, a disposable rain coat from the local $2 shop costs about $3.50 (inflation), and you can spray it with bleach when you get home.
