I tried calling their head office to give them a piece of my mind but it seems many others beat me to it, lines are jammed.

This is going to end very badly if this is not enforced properly.

Perhaps people should be considering what The Warehouse sells before condemning them

- pantry essentials

- cleaning products

- pet food

- nappies

The list goes on.

I would expect that The Warehouse will need to meet certain criteria, such as shutting off the toys section, the gardening section.....and when 4 people turn up in a car the security guard will tell them - 1 person only.

The Warehouse is an important source of daily needs for many low income families, so stop and think before criticism. Mitre10 offers nothing like TW does.

Why is the warehouse allowed to stay open and liquor places. So much for a lock down. 

People need to grow up and use their brains. The likes of The Warehouse and Mightyape are trying their level best to worm into the "essential business" category but they just aren't. Also, the law is a floor and not a ceiling -- during such trying times, people should try harder and not just think about the tips of their noses. The likes of TWG and Mightyape opening during the lockdown will be a disaster. You will have kids pestering their parents to go and look at toys, books or "just to pick up [insert thing]".

If you need a PC or whatever urgently, the likes of Dell/Apple are open. If your kids need games and books, these can now be bought online and I'd venture for all but the most unfortunate, you'll have the means to access those. If you really need something physical, go on Amazon or other overseas sellers. NZ shops that aren't selling food, pharmaceuticals and like should just close and stay closed. I said this many pages back: smart people need to remember which businesses are behaving truly ethically during these times.

And this comes from my wife (ER doctor): for god's sake don't do stupid things during the lockdown -- drive safely, don't do dangerous sports, don't climb up and down your roof if you don't know what you are doing. The hospital doesn't need you there.

Officially its not even being called a lock down their calling it "self-isolation" which imo downplays the seriousness a bit.

they are allowed to open until midnight Wednesday, it was the reason we didnt go straight to level 4 so  people could do last minute shopping before every thing was shut down.

 

They have announced they are "essential" and will remain open. You need to keep up with the news.

Nothing on that list above is unavailable from a supermarket or other stores definitively on the essential business list. Even if TWG will wall off non-essential sections, having to have additional security guards and/or other staff doing unnecessary work is an additional danger point that the community doesn't need.

A single electric hot plate costs about $70 from HNs.  Get a single pot and you're basically good to go.

 

People in small apartments don't want to purchase extra junk that they have no room for their small homes. Perhaps they can get a bargain at the Warehouse which will of course be open all the way through the lockdown.

I don't think food deliveries are going to be worse than mingling with all the people at the supermarket and even if you observe the 2 metre rule, you don't know who might have touched the packet you're putting in your trolley. In theory the food deliveries should have a traceable list of contacts that handled and delivered the food.

Yes, takeaways are a poor food choice but at a guess cafes, restaurants and takeaways possibly account for an average of 2 / 7 lunch and evening meals a week.  Possibly more.

The message has been to 'shop as normal' for food because the supply lines will still be intact.  However not allowing at least home delivery of takeaways will place significant additional demand on food required from supermarkets.  It is not obvious that this has been fully thought through.  Will supply lines fully cater for the additional demand, at least in the short-term?    

The situation for dairies and other local food stores does not appear to be clear yet.  But similar issues apply.  Closing those will further increase demand at supermarkets.  Closing dairies & similar will also make it even more difficult for older & other vulnerable people who do not live close to a supermarket.  Leaving these places open with strict requirements around social distancing, not working if any cold/flu like symptoms, and personal safety of staff (face masks etc as per supermarkets) would help to reduce congestion around supermarkets and potentially lower the risk of virus transmission.

Thanks for the link freitasm. Looks like finally updated the MoH website. Dont like speculating but I think we're gonna see a huge jump in cases today. Which will explain why we're going to level 4 so quickly

What part of removing people from the streets, reducing contacts don't people understand?

What part of you will die or cause someone else's death if you don't change your ways don't people understand?

Opening supermarkets is an essential move. Opening The Warehouse is not, because in terms of food the supermarket got you covered - and less people out there "working".

Oddly enough the U.S. considers uber eats an essential service and is still allowing them to work in states currently in lock down.
