A possible reason with hardware places is that when people spend 100% of their time at home rather than eat/sleep/shower they're putting a lot more stress on things, which means duct tape/silicone sealant/glue/whatever may be needed at some point. Bit of a thin argument though, they should maybe open one day a week for people to get essentials to patch up things that have broken.

I did think about getting some paint and doing some touchups around the place.

Turns out I wasn't the only one - our office is next to a Resene shop, and yesterday afternoon, after the Level-3 announcement, there were queues out the door.

I didn't get any paint, but I did try and go to a garden center to get some veges (mostly lettuce, silverbeet) to plant. All gone.

Ah well. There was still whisky at Super Liquor.

Perhaps people should be considering what The Warehouse sells before condemning them

- pantry essentials

- cleaning products

- pet food

- nappies

The list goes on.

They will probably do what super markets are doing, by having floor markers showing 2 metre distancing , and essential items will be put in one area and the rest fenced off. Also the number of people in the store restricted, and only being allowed to spend a a certain amount of time instore. Although they do sell some essentials, it isn't a wide range compared to a supermarket and they did move away from becoming another supermarket some time ago, as at one stage they were looking at becoming a third supermarket...a pity they didn't.

It's only builds where life and property are at risk, can't remember the exact wording. In other words "we've done X and need to follow up with Y over the next few days or there's a risk of collapse". So stabilising building sites, that sort of thing.

I would hope it covers things like if you have a plumbing or roofing leaks into the house which can cause major problems, or parts of your roof fly off in the wind, and you need it repairing urgently etc. Hopefully they will follow common sense, and it doesn't mean building an extension because you need more room during self isolation!

Not all construction workers. Only those directly involved in health.

And the one currently installing my Kitchen.

The prospect of 4 weeks isolation with the wife and having no kitchen was scarier than covid-19

There's a bit of an own goal in TW's statement:

"In the past two weeks the group has seen unprecedented demand for essential items across all our brands. Goods sold included essential items to prepare themselves for the mandatory isolation period of at least four weeks,"

... but that's not the same as providing essential items throughout the isolation period.

Whatever the argument, though, it's a terribly self-serving decision by the company. I just hope that MBIE grow the balls and push back against this, and then enforces it.

I also don't buy the argument that bottle stores in 'dry' areas should be considered essential, simply because alcohol isn't available from supermarkets in those areas. Is that seriously going to be the case?

It's reasonably clear:

*Any entity involved in building and construction related to essential services and critical infrastructure

*Any entity involved in building and construction required immediately to maintain human health and safety at home or work

* Any entity that performs or is involved in building and resource consenting necessary for the above purposes

The second point should cover burst pipes and the like.

In my opinion, just a self-serving company interested in milking the cash cow and keep stock price up in the NZX.
