Looks to me like we're still climbing and not yet approaching a flattening of the curve.

Surely that's going to take a minimum of 1-2 weeks now that we are all in bubble isolation before we see a reduction in the rate of acceleration.

That's a false assumption:

Testing has increased
Almost all of the increase is due to "imported" cases - not local epidemic spread.

It's pointless making comparisons at this stage - for those reasons.

You may find this article from The Spectator interesting. It is by a retired Professor of Pathology and is titled "How deadly is the coronavirus? It’s still far from clear."

”That puts the Covid-19 mortality rate in the range associated with infections like flu.”

The death rate in Italy is well above normal flu rates, something like 10x or 20x as deadly. E.g. a total of 68 000 deaths were attributable to flu epidemics in the winter months between 2013 and 2017 for the whole of Italy. Yet 8000 deaths directly or indirectly due to Covid from a small percentage of population that have caught virus.

“But there’s another, potentially even more serious problem: the way that deaths are recorded.”

Again, look at the data from Italy. They record deaths differently from many countries: if someone catches the flu or Covid and dies, it is recorded as a death due to flu or Covid. Other countries tend to put it down to the morbidities. That might inflate the numbers a little (but not enough to make the spectator article make sense).

That article seems misleading to me: using some facts but strangely out of touch.

I’m reasonably inclined to take the Professor and retired NHS consultant pathologist as having some idea what he’s talking about.

But somehow people are getting infected with masks. Some 300+ NYPD staff have got infected in the line of duty. This suggests that they don't know how to wear masks, and/or they haven't followed all the other advice on hand washing and have transferred virus from mask to face.

We will climb. If we literally froze everyone right now, and froze flights, it will still climb. We are counting 2 week old cases. Got infected two weeks ago, not symtomatic. Became symptomatic after 6 or more days. Got test a day or more later. test result 2 days later. Thats the lag

Our govt has managed much clearer messaging to the public. Even John Key has praised Ardern's faultless communications.

I agree, but they got plenty of warnings, lockdown as well. It shows the cutlure difference IMO. Aussies can be quite loud and brash compared to us. A bit more out there and fancy free. Kiwis are quite conservative. I'm not oblivious to Aussies I have a North Queenland half brother. The Australia cricket team and the Black Caps is another example. Its not a bad thing, its a difference, but in a time like this, its a weakness

Good Christ. I got a notification about someone on Facebook wanting to buy some pulleys. He wants to meet at a supermarket (in the carpark presumably) to complete the deal. Yeah I can see how that's an essential activity.

The UK has a problem as well. The PM, and health secretary, Matt Hancock, and England’s chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty have covid-19.

They've failed to practice social isolation, basic respiratory and hand hygiene and have become infected. What sort of message is that going to send to the UK public. I have yet to see a western leader wearing a mask, and yet to see an Asian leader not wearing a mask.

Need to be clear in how they are testing, less testing leads to the higher stats, also population median age is also key.

Facebook is a cesspool. I've been considering exiting for a while. It's just a pain in the posterior as it's a very efficient way to share stuff with people when you live overseas.

This thread is a cesspool.It's armpit deep in armchair experts, doomsayers, conspiracy theorists and stirrers. There's a lot to wade through to get to anything useful.

I see it as a discussion - and mostly based on links from reputable sources. We have been removing some "strange" links and commentary - Facebook, on the other hand, is a perpetual source of crap and people spreading that.

Meanwhile in Australia you can still get a hair cut so long as it takes less than 30 minutes! Yet everyone was outraged that people went to Bondi Beach. Imagine a teacher of say Year 4 kids asks them to come up with a list of jobs that should stop because of the two metre rule. I am pretty sure that the kids would have identified hair cuts as being on the list. Hair salons are actually asking to be closed down.

What is their PM doing? One day he seems to get the situation totally. The next day he sounds like Trump.
