Meanwhile in Australia you can still get a hair cut so long as it takes less than 30 minutes!  Yet everyone was outraged that people went to Bondi Beach.   Imagine a teacher of say Year 4 kids asks them to come up with a list of jobs that should stop because of the two metre rule.  I am pretty sure that the kids would have identified hair cuts as being  on the list.  Hair salons are actually asking to be closed down.

What is their PM doing?   One day he seems to get the situation totally.   The next day he sounds like Trump.

Salon issue not 'clear cut'   (Sky New story on YouTube)

Yes that is bordering on the ridiculous.

I for one appreciate the mods vigilance in keeping silly nonsense out of this long thread.

On Neighbourly there's some guy claiming the military are going to put up road blocks to prevent people from entering Whanganui. Give me a break!

And that's what 'flattening the curve' is all about.
Italy, Spain.. that's the result of Critical Care being overwhelmed.

The US is big and complicated, just 100K positives so far, but very different rates per state - and NY's reaching the stage where critical cases are going to turn into deaths.

Geektastic: I’m reasonably inclined to take the Professor and retired NHS consultant pathologist as having some idea what he’s talking about.

Without training in epidemiology he's just another unqualified armchair expert.

OOI are you claiming superior knowledge, so we can place that reply in context?

Meanwhile early, extensive testing and physical distancing introduced 2 weeks ago are just starting to show results in BC, Canada.

On Sky News AU with a UK report about Boris.

Boris, Chief Medical Officer and Heart Secretary all infected. In fact they showed Boris saying he went to hospital where they care for coronavirus victims and I shook hands with everybody and I will continue to do so.

Oh dear, no wonder the Queen took off

Need to be clear in how they are testing, less testing leads to the higher stats, also population median age is also key.

Yes - wonder whether these comparisons are apples with apples.

I'm not an epidemiologist though that was included in our core training.  But it's a specialty, a profession, that requires one to be trained and to practice.  Because one has expertise in dissecting bodies, or looking down a microscope or whatever this guy did as a pathologist, does not carry transferable knowledge to the field of epidemiology.

I believe our govt is taking advice from the University of Auckland where the mathematical modelling is being done based on knowledge of the math in epidemiology.

Note on average each of the 50 states in the US has 62 counties.

Trump continues to ignore advice, preferring to trust his gut. This includes the letter below. On Thursday he teased a new plan to reopen swaths of the US by county-by-county as high risk, medium risk and low risk.

US "Council of Medical Specialty Societies" statement on restrictions to slow the COVID-19 Pandemic

March 27, 2020

Dear President Trump, Vice President Pence, and Ambassador Birx:

Thank you for actively engaging the health care community—particularly the nation’s physicians and the organizations that represent them—in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

As more than 800,000 physicians across more than 40 specialties in medicine, we continue to support travel and gathering restrictions to slow the transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Physicians, other health professionals, and staff are putting themselves in harm’s way without adequate personal protective equipment or necessary tools (such as ventilators) as well as with no proven treatment or vaccine for the virus.

Significant COVID-19 transmission continues across the United States, and we need your leadership in supporting science-based recommendations on social distancing that can slow the virus. Our societies have closely adhered to these measures by moving our staff to fulltime telework and canceling in-person meetings (including annual meetings). These actions have helped to keep physicians and other health professionals in health care facilities, including hospitals, and reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Statewide efforts alone will not sufficiently control this public health crisis. A strong nationwide plan that supports and enforces social distancing—and recognizes that our health and our economy are inextricably linked—should remain in place until public health and medical experts indicate it can be lifted.

Federal, state, and local governments should only set a date for lifting nationwide social distancing restrictions consistent with assessments by public health and medical experts. Lifting restrictions sooner will gravely jeopardize the health of all Americans and extend the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Again, thank you for actively engaging the nation’s physicians and the organizations that represent them. We appreciate your considering these comments and welcome an opportunity for further dialogue.

Sincerely,

Council of Medical Specialty Societies
