kingdragonfly: Note on average each of the 50 states in the US has 62 counties.

Trump continues to ignore advice, preferring to trust his gut.
On Thursday he teased a new plan to reopen swaths of the US by county-by-county as high risk, medium risk and low risk.

Sounds like some of the advice (and the massive increases in infection in NY, NJ and other states) is sinking in..

Live now (03/27- 4:30pm mountain)

After saying restrictive public health measures would finish in weeks, maybe by Easter, he's now saying they might stay in place longer.

He says he wants to "flatten the curve...I certainly want to get it (govt) open as soon as possible...but we also want it to open safe."

When questioned, he said he "hopes it won't be months" before health measures, like social distancing are reduced.

He seems to have given up the idea of opening up the country county by county, and said - for social distancing - there 'are ways' of stopping unnecessary travel between counties, and that the US will manufacture 100,000 ventilators in next month or so, and would share them with other 'friendly' countries.

All in all, a lot of backpedalling today. Good to see.

Because he's an expert on pandemics who's been publicly warning “We are not ready for the next epidemic” for years.

Batman:

Because, believe it or not, he's very intelligent - and smart. Also he's been dedicating (with his wife) his life in the last few years to running the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He knows about health, epidemics because that's the main focus of their foundation.

He's definitely not Trump, you or me.

And he also has incredible resource available to him to provide scientifically derived, non partisan, non-political advice.

You could say that about Trump.

It comes down to the issue of trust and credibility.

But somehow people are getting infected with masks. Some 300+ NYPD staff have got infected in the line of duty. This suggests that they don't know how to wear masks, and/or they haven't followed all the other advice on hand washing and have transferred virus from mask to face.

Correct. I was queueing on Wednesday outside Warehouse Fraser Cove. In front of me I saw a couple in front of me, both 20's something. The male was in a 'bunny Onesie' and 'Doc Martins' with a bandanna over his mouth and nose. The bandanna had such an open weave you could see his teeth. His female companion was in a 'hoodie' with a surgical mask hanging of her nose. In front of them was another couple both wearing surgical masks where they obviously had not pressed the metal strip over and around the nose.

Everyone I have seen who are wearing masks are not wearing them correctly. They are also ALL fiddling with them and I bet they do not know how to remove them in a safe manner.

Those who are wearing some sort of fabric mask or cloth or bandanna, well it seems it has become the new fashion accessory. I have seen some very pretty ones.

Everyone I have seen who are wearing masks are also not wearing eye protection. Plus I would wage that those who wear gloves of any kind are not changing out of them after every single surface or body contact or even at least rubbing them down with hand sanitiser.

Well some industries are going to make a truck load out of this, even without price gouging or profiteering.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

His speech is so good, and clears up pretty much all of the idiots just looking for their little loopholes and excuses to be out and about (including several in this thread). Don't be stupid. Stay at home. It really could not be simpler.

Hone wasn't stopping 'everyone' entering Northland.. just those disease carrying non-locals.

I hadn’t realised he had the power to stop anyone at all.

On the TVNZ1 News coverage, there was also a police car and a constable assisting the operation.
According to a report here, Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha said " we want to model what it looks like when iwi, police, councils and other agencies work in partnership".

I’m frustrated by all the stories from ‘frontline workers’ wanting masks. However there are clear guidelines written by people who know more than us specifying when they are required

But i wonder if wearing any type of mask or gloves may reduce involuntary touching of the face’
Which must be good
