Best line from the 1pm update today:
"Don't be stupid"
I heard that, and I think it would have been better rephrased as "Don't do stupid things"
telling stupid people not to be stupid is counter productive.
freitasm:
This. Stupid people looking for loopholes to either get outside or to profit.
Don't be stupid.
Unfortunately there are always Stupid people out there and always will be.

Well some industries are going to make a truck load out of this, even without price gouging or profiteering.
Caretakers I imagine. And it's not even a regulated profession!

Batman:
why are people listening to bill gates?
Because, believe it or not, he's very intelligent - and smart. Also he's been dedicating (with his wife) his life in the last few years to running the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He knows about health, epidemics because that's the main focus of their foundation.
He's definitely not Trump, you or me.
He has also been working specify on this, including working with getting an easier self test that is just as accurate as the current one , that potentially be mailed in and out to everyone. He knows that testing is one of the keys in this, especially when countries go into lockdown, as that is the ideal time to get it done. Knowing who has got it, including those that never shown symptoms but can still spread it, which appears to be quite a good percentage, is key IMO
Zepanda66: 83 new cases we're now at 451.
I am wondering if it wouldn't be an idea for them to also show from their modelling, how many people they project are currently infected as of today, due to the incubation lag. Otherwise these numbers are 1-2 weeks behind.
So it provides a more accurate representation of how many people may have it. Potentially they could also show the graph of how they expect things to go if everyone does their job in staying at home. Then it also gives people a goal, and they can see how staying at home is helping to beat this.
There is also the fear that some people have got it but are not getting tested because it is either mild or they think there is a stigma in having it. They did discuss this at the briefing that some people had been bullied. But when the future King and British Prime minister have it, it shows that it can affect everyone irrespective of who you are. So everyone who thinks they may have it also should contact their doctor, as that can save lives.
Just went to buy fuel. Lots of walkers, good, lots of cars too. Not sure why

I got the feeling that they weren't taking it seriously even when senior politicians in Iran were dying.
They carried on doing their thing without masks etc even though the data shows asymptomatic infected people have been up to 65%, and those people are infecting other people.

i think is unfair to blame Taiwan when they are excluded from the WHO, and without more inside information (perhaps they did warn everyone, nobody seems to be listening to them much).
Also, there is far too much blaming of others going on (let’s blame China/CDC/Trump/Etc), not enough humility to see where we have each made our own errors in preplanning, or mistakes in ineffectively reacting to the slow burning crisis.
Do not know if this has been posted before - From the CBC:
"'Worse' pandemic on horizon unless world deals with wildlife markets'
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
gchiu: But somehow people are getting infected with masks. Some 300+ NYPD staff have got infected in the line of duty. This suggests that they don't know how to wear masks, and/or they haven't followed all the other advice on hand washing and have transferred virus from mask to face.
Masks aren't for preventing infection, they're for preventing you from spreading it if you have it. If you're hospital staff and have training in how to correctly fit an N95 and the discipline to keep it on and use it correctly (they're a right pain to breathe through) and additional training and discipline to handle it appropriately when removing it then you get the benefit of the mask. Most people don't have that, and so won't get much benefit.
Police work involves an awful lot of up-close interaction and contact, think about searching someone's car for a drug stop, checking their driver's license and writing down details, etc, and given the scale of the outbreak in NYC surfaces everywhere will have it, so it may not even be "in the line of duty" but just while they were doing ordinary things.
Sidestep:Meanwhile early, extensive testing and physical distancing introduced 2 weeks ago are just starting to show results in BC, Canada.
Good to see that, the more data we can get and the sooner we get it, the better for the "it's just the flu" and "let's not risk the stock market being hit" idiots.

That could simply be due to the amount of exposure for the nurses and doctors.
An N95 mask reduces the particles by 95% if well fitted. Let’s rashly assume a linear reduction in risk of infection of 20x. A nurse without a mask exposed for 1 hour is at the same risk as a nurse with a well fitted N95 exposed for 20 hours.
the pertinent data point here is that no medical staff in Singapore have been infected while using minimal protection.
(And no medical staff outside of Hubei province have been infected but they have heavy duty protection )

"Don't be stupid"
His speech is so good, and clears up pretty much all of the idiots just looking for their little loopholes and excuses to be out and about (including several in this thread). Don't be stupid. Stay at home. It really could not be simpler.
But the official word the government is stating is
What does staying at home mean?
The Government has asked all people in New Zealand to stay at home to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
As long as you are not unwell, you can leave your house to:
If you do leave your house, you must keep a 2 metre distance from other people at all times. Police may be monitoring people and asking questions of people who are out and about during the Alert Level 4 lockdown to check what they are doing.
There are three ways opportunities there for me to leave the house, and clear guidelines to follow when you do. That is fairly clear

Dear petulant three-year-old,
You're such a good boy, very bright for your age, and we love everything about you and everything you do, but would you please, please let the adults take care of things? We love you and think you've wonderful, the best three-year-old we've ever encountered, so much better than all the others, you're so amazing it blows us away, but please?

You misunderstood what I wrote. The blame lies with the WHO and China who blocked Taiwan's observer status.
And I said we need to make sure we are able to listen to all lines of communication, and not just the traditional western ones.
