Just went to buy fuel. Lots of walkers, good, lots of cars too. Not sure why

Not sure buying fuel is essential if you're also not meant to be going anywhere? /sic

I"m seeing adverts for DVS who can provide home ventilation.

Great to see Kiwi firms getting involved in building the country's resilience here!

Some people might not have planned well enough and might need petrol for grocery shopping. Once filled, a tank for a non-essential worker living in a suburb with its own supermart should be enough for a four-week lockdown, surely?

gchiu: "Taiwan’s early understanding of the threat of the coronavirus could have given others advance warning. Taiwan’s inability to disseminate its findings cost lives."

robocat: I think is unfair to blame Taiwan when they are excluded from the WHO, and without more inside information (perhaps they did warn everyone, nobody seems to be listening to them much).

gchiu: You misunderstood what I wrote.  The blame lies with the WHO and China who blocked Taiwan's observer status. And I said we need to make sure we are able to listen to all lines of communication, and not just the traditional western ones.

Sorry, I agree with both those points (actually I seem to agree with most of your comments). In my defence, your meaning wasn’t clear from your quote.

I for one appreciate the mods vigilance in keeping silly nonsense out of this long thread.

On Neighbourly there's some guy claiming the military are going to put up road blocks to prevent people from entering Whanganui. Give me a break!

If we get an outbreak anywhere, I hope that we get military cordons. I don’t want an exodus of infected people “escaping” to other centres (like we saw happen from Northern Italy).

I *loath* and fight authoritarianism, but sometimes we need to face facts that not everyone is altruistic or understands the risks and consequences of their actions.

So we’ve had interest rates fall.

A lot of people might need their credit cards to get through this. Has anyone seen card rates fall?

Aside: i generally find Batman’s comments about Covid to be more signal than noise, especially anything about US politics (oy vey!) but I’m hoping I can start distracting him and maybe he’ll go bush for a while ;-)

For those who want to discuss a more constructive article, if you haven’t read it, “The hammer and the dance”: https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-the-hammer-and-the-dance-be9337092b56

It’s a follow on from the article I linked here approx 11th Mar. (frednz ((and geektastic IIRC??)) didn’t like that article, which may recommend it to some? :-D); prepackaged apologies for syntax errors in this para. (sp). (sic).

LOL you must be kidding. The banks are the last to make any kind of sacrifice in crises.

I agree. However, I’m surprised they haven’t had their arm twisted.

The Banks feel they have sacrificed enough with all the extra interest they will earn with *cough* mortgage holidays. The poor souls.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
