Does anyone know how notifications using the CovidCard system work? My understanding is that the cards themselves don't connect to the internet?

My understanding is a register of card owners with contact details are held.  If someone tests positive their card is sourced and the interactions downloaded.  This allows the contact details of other card holders to be accessed by contact tracers via the card ID.

Ah, that makes sense. So quite a manual process.

A recent stuff news article on covidcard here

Interesting that the govt currently see mandatory widespread use of Covidcard if deployed as the "last resort"...

Does anyone know what % of the NZ adult population has a mobile? (I'll assume >5% of mobiles are not capable of running the app)

NB: An earlier stuff news opinion pros and cons article is here

And if the "last resort" Covid card doesn't work it will be the "last resort" tracker chip injected into  your arm like with  dogs and cats.

I had to laugh at the cartoon that was included in that article. It shows the steps required to order and receive a card. Apparently after receiving the card in the mail you have to activate it by scanning a QR code on the back of the card with your phone. This was after the article said "Any smartphone-based solution is for the richest half of the world’s population." and then they go and require a smartphone to activate the card!

Otherwise it's a very good article that has a lot more detail than I've seen previously and answers many of my questions on exactly how the card system works.

@MurrayM

Yes the irony of requiring if true a smartphone to activate your CovidCard!

Add If people are finding scanning QR codes an issue whether due to the codes being not well placed or perhaps variations in cameras compare that to the following technical short coming of the ($100M+) CovidCard

According to of the Dean Armstrong (CE of the CovidCard developers) "a drawback of not having the cards worn at about the same height was that they could then under-record the significance of brief, very close contacts, because the faces of the cards which housed their radio antennas could then be at an acute angle"

In short CovidCard may have issues with not worn correctly
