That doesn't sound right. Only 1.7 million scans a day, for 2 million people using it? Sounds like a lot of people have downloaded it but not using it. Or is there a problem with their data?

I only go out once or twice a week, not counting work. Maybe one to two places each time. So wouldn’t expect all 2 million to scan every day. Sounds like a good number to me.

All the places I’ve been to in last few weeks, except for one, everyone else has just walked past the scan in sign. I’m only one scanning. No Queue at signs.

I recall reading that the app doesn't use data, and stores your log on the phone, which you can upload if requested. That implies it doesn't phone home each time there is a scan, so how do they know how many scans occur in a day?

Periodically when it does have data it uploads the anonymous stats.

Ive had a too quick to see' no connection' like message popup when opening it before, unsure if coincidentally with something else firing up however.

Here's a dumb question. I'm at work for 10 hours. I sign in first thing when I get there. How does it know how long I'm here for? Am I meant to sign out with a scan?

It doesn't need to. If you go somewhere else, and scan in there, then it knows you're not at work any more.

I believe the app doesn't know and isn't supposed to know.  It's more of a diary of places you've been to than the exact in and out times.  I guess there's nothing stopping anyone signing out of places as it'll just show two entries at the same location.

I don't really go anywhere else though - I just show up the next day and scan in again. Maybe the exact time isn't as important as others have stated.

I'm not convinced that it matters.

If your workplace gets implicated in an outbreak then your employer would have a fair idea of who was on site over a given period based on everyone's normal working hours, who was on leave, etc.

In the case of public places contact tracers could probably make a pretty good estimate of how long people were on site based on the type of place - e.g. half an hour for a supermarket, a couple of hours for a restaurant, etc.

The app data is just a tool to assist contact tracers.

Good question - and there are two ways of doing it.

One was already suggested: the app periodically upload a summary of the number of scans. The other is using an analytics package - e.g Google Analytics or anything else - and fire an event for each time some specific action happens.

The second method is how companies track e-commerce performance, goals, etc - you put something in a shopping cart (action). You remove something from shopping cart (action). You checkout (action, goal, value). Then companies just have to look at Google Analytics (or other package) and see everything in one place.

I've been reasonably impressed by people scanning. I've been to the supermarket, a cafe, chemist, and Bunnings and every person who entered around the same time as me scanned in.

I don't scan in for work when I'm at the office (altough I haven't been in since AKL went back to level 3). We've been told any need for contact tracing is handled by my employer using data from rosters and the swipe card door lock thingies.

My employer, despite having swipe card only access and the logs from that also requires us to scan the app AND sign in and out on a manual register.  Definitely making sure we are logged.

same here. and it does make sense... if a work mate were involved in tracing from a different place he/she signed in, e.g. supermarket, the tracing/notification extends to us at work (automatically).

There's also this note tagged in the data export spreadsheet

The number of scans and manual entries on any given date is subject to change for up to 31 days. This is because there can be a delay before anonymised analytic information is received (eg, device not connected to internet when scan carried out)

Using google site search for analytics, some of it is outlaid in the PIA too. Does look to be event triggered so possibly a google tie in

31. Analytics events may also be captured at key stages of the App and Website experience.
These events are used to provide reporting into the effectiveness and performance of the
CCTA and the contact tracing end-to-end service model. Specific events include:

• When the Consumer uses the ‘scan location’ feature, an event may be recorded that
a scan has taken place. No information about the location of this scan or the identity
of the Consumer will be recorded. It is not possible to use this event to reconstruct a
Consumer’s movements or track where they have been. Information about recorded
locations remains on their device.

• Events may be triggered when the Consumer navigates to different parts of the
application. The information recorded in this event does not contain personally
identifying information.

There has been iOS update this morning with the major addition of "Exposure Notifications". For the MoH it is an 'Opt In' ability. Activating Exposure Notifications lets you know if the feature is available in your country, state, or region through a contact tracing app. In areas that are participating in the Exposure Notifications Express program, users will be able to turn on Exposure Notifications without the need to download an app. Once you enable exposure notifications in the Settings app, your iPhone will monitor using Bluetooth to log possible exposures so you can be notified of a potential COVID-19 exposure based on the guidelines set by your local public health authority.

Having activated it on my phone, it informs me that "Exposure Notifications Are Not Currently Available as it has not been turned on for your region by your public health authority."

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I could have sworn they put that in with 13.5... Same time google did.

It's basically something they got in early with to let people develop apps using it without delay.

Quick google suggests this is phase 2 to make that more available. Opt into provider, we do it for you instead
