Could they have done that before it was classed as a Pandemic? The WHO took a long time to classify it as a pandemic, when I would have thought computer modeling would show where this was heading, especially based on what happened in China. I remember a computer game based on a virus, when I was a kid (think it was a game for the Acorn), that was essentially a computer modeling of how different viruses spread.

There have been a lot of stories on both drugs to treat it, and possible future vaccines. Some that possibly worked with SARS, so some have had head starts. But testing is the key, and getting approval, and that is one reason it takes so long. But hopefully at least one is proven to work.

Can't say I am surprised. But those imbeciles (I suppose if they were educated enough to reflect on this they wouldn't be ranting about the sign language being distracting etc) really should be proud of the fact that sign language is an official language of this country and that our government has chosen to be inclusive. Has anyone noticed the absence of the sign interpreters in a lot of overseas briefings?

They've got no rights at all to close public roads, but IIRC some of the first reports of this were closing of privately owned roads that had been used by the public. The usual clickbait-prone dimwits who never read past a headline thought this was a thing. And now it's become a thing, apparently. Just not a very big thing - for example the "roadblock" in Makara isn't a roadblock - it's some locals who've put a movable barrier mainly to the side of the road with some signs telling people to bugger off.

Putting brown people in a bad light is always good for clicks though!

Yes, we MUST make it a Legal requirement,
Our Court system is a absolute 'disaster' - with 'simple' child immunization(with no medical reasons not too & prior agreement by both parties to Immunise),
Taking 1-2 years, to work through the system, with unethical Lawyers happily abusing the processes, with no consequences to them - And costing $150,000 !!!
(Anti Vaxxers reconise the absured costs they can cause the other party - so they specifically cause huge costs, to make the other party give up or go bankrupt trying to protect their child)

This is ludicrous and shows the total incompetence of our Legal system, - these decisions need to be take totally out of Court systems Hands -

You need to understand the distinction between the legal system from the laws. The legal system exists to execute the laws. The issue isn't with the legal system, it's with the laws. It's up to parliament to implement laws.

Fully agree. Todays science, and more so, the efforts from many globally is a positive sign. So far its just hope.

When I last posted the Wellington Mayoral update yesterday someone mentioned rates. So here it is:

Rates – I’m going to jump right into this subject, because many of you are asking about it.

A lot of businesses are hurting especially in sectors which have essentially been closed down by the Lockdown. Sadly that means a lot of people have lost their jobs or had hours reduced. Many people are looking to the City Council to make some big moves to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of softening the economic blow for local businesses and ratepayers. We absolutely get that, and we’re working on it.

I’m meeting with my councillors and our Chief Executive Barbara McKerrow and her senior management team in a workshop tomorrow where we’ll be looking at all the financial issues facing the city and the Council. A wide range of options will be discussed. We will provide councillors with a lot of background information about what other Councils are signalling, and the scale of the impact of the current situation on the Council’s own revenue. The sums involved are very large.

We know councils around the country are facing similar financial pressures as Wellington City Council – and we’ve been talking at political and senior management level with other big councils and via Local Government NZ.

We will discuss the potential for deferral of the next rates bill due in June.

We will discuss the approach to the 2020/21 rates, and their willingness to alter the expenditure programme and service levels or debt fund operating expenditure.

We will discuss a ‘pandemic package’.

We will discuss Government’s request to bring forward capital projects to help reboot the economy.

We will discuss the way we handle the Annual Plan process. What spending cuts could mean for big projects like Te Ngakau Civic Square, the Central Library, the Town Hall project and our various infrastructure obligations – notably our three-waters network – will be front-of-mind.

So will the possibility that we could get some ‘shovel-ready’ projects going if the local economy needs ‘pump-priming’ in the coming year.

Council borrowing and debt levels will also be discussed – this is an issue that’s starting to be debated at a national level so we’ll be getting briefings on the implications of such an approach to reduce rates impact.

Any recommendations that come from the workshop will be formally discussed at a full Council meeting next Thursday. Immediately after tomorrow’s workshop I’ll be taking part in an infrastructure meeting with the region’s other mayors and council CEOs

Finally, and on a different note, tonight at midnight marks just one week since we entered the lockdown. That means we’ve got another three weeks to go – in the best case scenario.

It’s been a strange seven days, with some sad moments, some surreal moments, but also plenty of surprising and uplifting moments.

Like me, I’m sure you’ve been seeing amazing examples of kindness, respect, patience and aroha on a daily basis. Everyone I am seeing is doing the right things, staying home, exercising locally, keeping physical separation. There’s a real sense of togetherness in this.

I am hearing some people though don’t appear to be taking it seriously and there are places where people are congregating. Please, please don’t do that. We are having to look at closing at least one more popular location which would be a shame, but we just have to keep separation.

Covid-19 is highly contagious. We want to stamp it out in New Zealand now. That way we save lives, and can get out of Lockdown earlier rather than later. We also reduce the impact on our economy and our standard of living.

So thanks again Wellington – you’ve been absolutely, positively awesome. Stay safe, stay connected, stay home, and stay strong – kia kaha. I’ll be back tomorrow with another update.

You mean ... all these time ... they haven't! (I don't want to get myself into trouble but I am wondering what else they are not reporting. Would that be fair. Hmm just reminded about something a SA youtuber's Chinese doctor wife mentioned so I better not say. Its not a conspiracy, just different ways of reporting. )

This article is alarmist, the disease can't be transmitted via sweat. If runners keep 2 meters their is no problem.

I agree it's alarmist, but I wouldn't rule out that transmission from sweat is possible.

The guy wearing protection stuff has direct contact with his phone and contamines himself! NEVER USE YOUR PHONE LIKE THIS - AGAIN NEVER!

Actually, the problem is that he is contaminating his phone from his (we assume) contaminated gloves and mask. At some time in the future, when he uses the phone without a mask or handles it without gloves, he will contaminate himself. But of course all his outer clothing and footwear is potentially contaminated too.

INAL, but section 8 seems to conflict.. also can't see where "medical treatment" is defined... I'm sure there will be some loop hole to force it..

Not vaccinated, no kiwi saver top up, or working for families, or ECE payments for your kids or free medical treatment of any complicationsetc etc.. Much like aussie don't let kids into day care unless vaccinated
