Found out something new - please cut me some slack if I sound really dumb.

Yesterday, my partner tried to scan in to a shop and discovered she was logged out. Even though the email and password fields were populated her phone wouldn't log in - phone said "an error occurred trying to sign you in" Turns out that you need an internet connection for the google password thingy to work. I suppose everybody except me knows this, but the question is, why couldn't the error message say "turn on data, dork"?

Yep - had that problem last weekend when setting up my sister-in-laws cheap android provided by her work. She had never changed anything in the settings (Not even adding in her home network) and the Data was turned off.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Same problem. Seems to occur each time there is an app update. IMO poor app and so frustrating, especially for the elderly people I set up on it who also had the same problems with it. Some people don't have mobile data to logging when out, if it needs data to do this. It shouldn't log you out each time it has an update. I instead downloaded Rippl, which doesn't appear to need us to login, you just download and it works, no registration required. Far better system IMO, although the camera view is distorted and elongated when scanning the code, although doesn't appear to affect scanning..

I think we can all agree the Govt app been substandard from the outset, but its all we've got.

Rippl may work much better, but if it's not linked into the main MoH tracing database, its best to useless, isn't it?

I think it is similar to just writing down the places visited. But it does also appear to be able to send out push notifications if someone has visited a place that someone infected has visited as per below. But it is up to the rippl user to then contact health officials. So it puts the ball in our court to then contact health officials, which seems to be where the difference is.

As a customer, does Rippl give Health Services my information?

No. The server only sees the list of venues and times of a possible infection.

Let’s use an example to illustrate our point here:

If there was a customer at Cafe PaperKite who was reported to Health Services to have a possible infection, and they visited the Cafe today at 6pm, the server sends that information to all the Rippl apps on customers’ phones. The apps then cross-check the local logs to see if the customer was there within a date and time range that includes today at 6pm. If determined by the app that the customer was there, the app will alert the user with instructions on how to notify Health Services.

If you receive an alert, it is up to you to get in touch with Health Services.

The elderly seem to think re-scanning using the govt app it is helping them 'logout'. When infact f someone spends 3hrs somewhere. When a positive case reports they were there for only 3mins an hour after that person left. They have put themselves back into the 'arrival from now' timeframe by scanning their leaving time.

I doubt very much that false impression is just restricted to the elderly. I can see why people might think this way especially if they've had prior experience with something like Rippl.

I know the NZCovid app doesn't work this way but having a log out function makes a lot of sense.

Having a logout makes no sense.
If contact tracers want to know you are in the range. If someone came in 5 mins after you normally they want you to isolate or at least have you as a casual contact rather than not at all.
And I know personally I forgot many times when using rippl so would remain logged in for hours after I left.

The time you arrived is to be used by the contact tracing folks when you’re talking with them.

Technology isn’t supposed to solve the problem that humans are doing a far better job of.

It doesn't for me. It does logout after 30 days as designed but not at every update.

I updated on Friday and it kept me logged in. Are you sure you're not just hitting the 30 day limit?

My faith in the team of 5 million is diminishing.

From my observation on the Upper Hutt/Wellington train this morning, I would, unfortunately, have to agree. Seemed to be only a handful of people scanning the app, though all that I saw were wearing masks. Most continued to wear them while walking in the crush down the platform but I did note a few pulling them off for what is basically a more at risk part of the journey where people are walking shoulder to shoulder.

Automatic logout in NZ Covid Tracer makes recording visits more difficult - I have one arm in a sling right now so it is a lot more frustrating.

If the app logs me out then I can't record a visit. So why is logout prioritised over actual tracking?

Automatic logout could be optional or warn me so I can log back in again before I need to record a visit.

If I heard correctly, the next update will allow scanning while logged out. It'd still be better for it not to logout in the first place though.
