My brother in Toronto said that weed shops there are 'essential businesses' in lockdown.

I'd rather some people were smoking a spliff than drinking beer at the moment. Theres far less of a chance for domestic violence for someone stoned than drunk.

gchiu: We had anti spitting signs in Lambton Quay as well at least in the 1960s.

I believe NZ had a Tuberculosis epidemic in the late 50s. As kid I remember anti spitting signs on quite a few lamp posts around the neighbourhood.

Good writeup in The Spinoff about Covid19 conspiracy theories, including this gem:

Tom Hanks is addicted to Adrenochrome and he caught Covid-19 from the latest batch of tainted Adrenochrome that came through Celine Dion who is a high priestess from the Church of Satan. She is well-versed in poison as she’s been lacing her children’s clothing line with a chemical that makes our children “gender neutral”. Tom Hanks signalled to the Hollywood Liberal Elite Cabal DeepState in his Golden Globes acceptance speech that there would be a shortage of Adrenochrome. Ellen has closed her studio audience because she’s addicted as well. Heidi Klum is too. And so is Michael Rapaport.

I can't tell if the writer has made that up just to be silly or it's for real, which would be Poe's Law in action.

Flattening the curve never seemed like a great option.

Yeah, but look at some of the measures being proposed:

* Make millions of diagnostic tests available

* Supply health workers with PPE and equip hospitals to care for a surge in severely ill patients

* Inspire and mobilize the public

He forgot to add:

* Feed the starving

* Give all children a good education

* End climate change

* Create world peace

No argument against that from me. Domestic or any other kind.

I recall a sketch on TV a long time ago (might have been Ben Elton) in which the inclusion of cannabis as a 'performance-enhancing drug" in sports was royally roasted!

Things are really starting to ramp up here in the UAE. A week ago our numbers were tracking similar to NZ, now we are at ~1900.

A full lockdown was initiated last night. Now to leave the house you need a permit. All the speed cameras (there are a LOT of speed cameras here) photograph every car. No permit = ~$800 fine. You can still get takeaways and other goods delivered.

There are some demographic issues here which could cause real problems, particularly if it gets into the large labour camps. Expo had 45000 people a day on the site with probably 30000 living in labour camps.

It's going to be an interesting time in the next couple of weeks.

This will be only the fourth message (outside of the traditional Christmas Day message) HM The Queen has delivered during her 68-year reign.

I predict she will say Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives. Oh well, I suppose it is harmless...
