I'm really disappointed at the daily numbers we're still seeing. Per head of population we're not doing that well at all considering we're in lock-down.

Australia has 5 times our population for instance, their lock-down has come on very gradually & been all over the place, & yet their per head figures are comparable, although their deaths are higher.

I believe Oz is testing at a fairly high rate as well (one of the highest if you can believe their PM) so we can't just say we're finding more.

The daily briefing keeps informing us we're seeing high numbers from the clusters, but if you look at the figures on the MOH website this isn't the case.
For instance right now, there were only 18 new cases from the identified clusters in the last 24 hrs.

This means the vast majority of our new cases could be many smaller clusters currently under 10 people, or individuals.

Since we're in lock-down, if we keep seeing cluster increases this must surely mean they're in essential workers which could drag this thing out for quite a while.

I think I read that 40%+ of workers are essential?

I wish the reporters in the daily Q & A would ask some deeper questions.

The alternative is that the business owner just says to his employees "Sorry folks - can't keep this going." and winds up the business. Result - 11 unemployed people and a bunch of unpaid suppliers, tax bills etc etc.

We are going to see a lot of that, I'm afraid

However, a business with eleven employees almost counts as 'medium sized' in NZ
I believe the median NZ business is about five employees

It was good to see that the guy who deliberately coughed and sneezed on people in a supermarket has been arrested and charged. I am hoping he gets a nasty shock in court tomorrow.

He's already spent two nights in the cells at Christchurch Central Police Station.

Together with a decent fine - the maximum under the Health Act charge alone is $4000 - and maybe some community service, it might well create an attitude adjustment.

For a silly drunken act, the norm is probably discharge without conviction , pay court costs, you learnt a lesson, but right now the value to make an example is massive. Potentially life saving, when others think twice, and that's about any negative virus related act. We need to be shown that it wont be tolerated

The argument being, the people who would do this (drunk being a factor) are unlikely to consider the consequences.

I support harsh punishment for it, but I don't see it really doing much to the general populace. Those who wouldn't do it anyway, won't do it, and those who would, will.

Is it unreasonable to expect by now that the questions asked at the PM's etc press conferences are able to be heard clearly on the broadcasts? Surely the PR staff responsible have access to technical advice and facilities such as roving or long-range directional microphones?

The questions seem to be a bit of a free for all, handing a cordless mic around isn't going to happen, and I guess whoever the person is trying to point a shotgun mic on a boom quickly enough to get the question coming from an unexpected anywhere has their work cut out.

My impression from the way the camera moves is that there isn't anyone there physically controlling things from a broadcast perspective. The camera appears to be working on remote control so having someone with something like a boom mic wouldn't be an option. A mic could perhaps be suspended over the gallery but it's a reasonably large space so, given that the press are somewhat of a rabble, there'd be a ton of noise coming through.

we are importing 30-40 new cases each day (either passenger tests positive + their bubble member). nothing to do with lockdown, which helps not to spread to the community

Do you think this guy would have done what he did, even if someone else had earlier had the book thrown at them? I think so.

A very small percentage of people behave this way, they do stupid, inconsiderate and thoughtless things, lockdown or not.

Yes. There is considerable disparity between states. I think the headline figure is PCR confirmed cases in Aus vs PCR + "probable" cases in NZ. The identified clusters in NZ have very high case numbers (about 1/3 of total cases from just 12 clusters) and resulted from people being dumb before rules were enforced. St Patrick's day booze ups?

It's too early to say - a small discrepancy in data multiplied gives a large discrepancy when trying to predict a future trend.

I think the claim that Aus is testing more (than we are - though that's not what he specifically claimed) is true. Scomo's "most in the world" isn't. I think that Iceland can claim that (as % of population).

Are there any priority people here (elderly and/or with medical conditions) who have tried to get flu vaccinations and been unable to? I am well over 65 with a lung condition and I routinely receive vaccinations every year. This time I have been unable to. I have contacted my GP's health centre multiple times since the middle of March and they keep saying they are out of vaccine and don't have enough even for urgent cases. Everything they have told me is in complete contradiction to the messages being put out by MoH and the PM's daily briefings. I don't want to start any rumours here but I am seriously beginning to wonder if false information is not being disseminated to prevent panic. So has anyone else who should be a priority had trouble getting the flu jab?
