Level 3 is not the exact same criteria going backwards, as it is forwards.

And of course you do know what elimination means right? it is not eradication of the virus (zero cases). I actually think the PM using that term in the early days without clarifying it probably meant a lot of people expected zero new cases after lockdown.

Eradication refers to cases in the world being reduced to zero. Elimination is getting it down to a predefined low number of cases, such as zero,  within a certain geographic region and keeping it down. So eradication isn't possible until all countries get rid of it, so NZ can't 'eradicate ' it, we can only ever eliminate it.

https://vaccine-safety-training.org/elements/articles/eradication-difference.html

A & D are the correct answers

I know that and you know that, but from day one after the PM gave her speech a lot of people thought that elimination here meant that we would have zero cases and no spread by now, which was clearly not what anybody who had looked at modelling or understood the terms knew.

A lot of people seemed surprised last Monday when she clarified what that actually meant.

The reason why reporters ask some of these inane questions is laid out in Paul Brislens excellent twitter thread linked below. There is an element of entertainment but there is also a serious point to this. Some brain surgeon will undoubtably drink disinfectant and then the authorities will be blamed for not saying it was a dumb idea.

Just to point this out to people, if you haven't already read the post at that link, do so now, as well as the followup comments. It's a really good explanation of why reporters ask the things they do, and the reasoning behind why things are done certain ways.

@frednz: Rules, rules, rules ..... why on earth do we need rules that try to tell us what we can and can't do. Why not rely on people just being sensible ...

The concept of common sense is a long-standing term, based on human experience and people's individual perceptions. Common sense isn't actually common, in either sense: it is different from person to person, and may not be employed even when many editors could agree on what it is in a particular situation.
Thus, when discussing issues of importance to projects on Wikipedia, don't consider your position, or the position that you agree with, or even a position that has consensus, to be "common sense", because it's nothing more than your perception. Your idea of common sense is likely to contradict someone else's idea of common sense

Wikipedia:Common sense is not common

Covid-19 Immunity Compared to 6 Other Diseases (Common Cold, HIV, SARS, and More) | Cause + Control

WIRED

If you get Covid-19 and recover does that mean you are immune to the virus? If you become immune, how long does that immunity last? We are still looking for answers to many of these questions. In the meantime, Dr. Seema Yasmin takes a look at the human body's immunity to some other viral infections such as chickenpox, HIV and the common cold.

Probably not what you want to hear - but that doesn't satisfy me one little bit.

to quote the second tweet:

"Sometimes journalists ask stupid questions because they're stupid. This is usually not the case but can happen. Usually they ask stupid questions to get the ANSWER to the stupid question on tape or film or on record."

Asking a stupid question (ie does 5G cause C-19 - or does drinking bleach cure it?) just gives oxygen to the dumbest freaking morons who'll never be convinced otherwise - regardless of the eloquence or expertise of the interviewee.

This deep south US pastor keeps defying the state laws about religious gatherings. One of his flock died of the virus, but the pastor said the coroner was lying.

Same pastor asked for his flock to sign over their government stimulus checks to him.

A protestor outside his megachurch held a sign warning about the contagion dangers of large gatherings. In response, the pastor boarded a bus alone, and drove very quickly at the the protestor. He said it was entrapment. The pastor was arrested and made bail.

Louisiana pastor, while on house arrest, again defies coronavirus order with church service

A Louisiana pastor who defied state orders against large gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic has been placed under house arrest.

Tony Spell, of Life Tabernacle Church in the city of Central, has been fitted with an ankle bracelet and placed under house after he would not promise to maintain social distancing, his attorney confirmed Sunday. Spell has admitted to violating Louisiana's mandate to avoid large gatherings by hosting church services.

Spell still showed up to the church's Sunday service, where he was greeted with cheers, according to a livestream posted on Facebook. The pastor showed off his ankle monitor while standing in front of his congregation, claiming, "I'm not hiding anymore."

"It's a dirty, rotten, crying shame when you have to hide in America," he said.

Joseph Long, Spell's attorney, told NBC News in a statement that Spell lived 50 yards from his church, which still planned to host services Sunday. Long characterized the judge's order as forcing Spell to stop "preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to his congregation."

"The judge has found him in contempt of Court for refusing to promise," Long said. "Obviously, we believe this is an illegal order in violation of the Constitution, and will litigate the issue."

Many times there's a serious reason for what they are doing, whether it is the right thing to do is a seperate but clearly valid discussion.

Disagreeing with the premise for asking a dumb question is a bit different than saying that the journalists are stupid or asking for fun.

freitasm: Are you blocking Twitter?

It's just NoScript's default blocking, but yeah, it'll block Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Or at least it'll block Javascript from those sites, not Twitter itself. I assume the video was somehow displayed using embedded JS from Twitter?

Edited to add: Yep, it's embedded JS from Twitter:

script async src='//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js' charset='utf-8'

Interesting to note that GZ will block that as well, if you try and quote the message containing the link you get:

Sorry, you have been blocked

You are unable to access geekzone.co.nz

Oh, and if you post a message with more than two quote blocks, you also get blocked, which is why the above isn't inside a quote block :-).
