freitasm:

And then you use the filter - you are using the filter, right?

Yep, got a few packs of filters.

But the mask itself feels like putting a Countdown bag on my face

I wanted to get a mask that we can wear comfortably for several hours. And surgical/disposables for shorter applications like, at the shops.

Any longer than 20 minutes in a surgical (or N95) and I need to take it off after 20 minutes, as I hyperventilate/sweat.

Yes, I know - the main problem is the filter fibres go through the mask and tickle your face/nose.

The alternative is the Untouched World mask - uses the same filters but is fabric. But it gets really hot, even in winter.

This is the amount of fibres went through the Earth Sea Sky mask on the first day of use

And on the inside

The polypropylene material sticks to the fibres (like cheap synthetic clothing does) and goes through the coarse weave.

But I discovered that the majority of the escaping fibres are on one side of the filter (opposite side of the printing)

So you need to face the filter label to your face to get a lot less fibres tickling your case.

Now looking for another mask with much finer weave.

How many fibres are ending up in your lungs?

It's Merino fibres, so unlikely it will be more effect than inhaling human hair

I only use 3M P2 certified masks.

Anything not certified you may as well just tie a handkerchief round your face Western train robber style and hope it works....

I would rather wear a mask than contract "Barbers Lung" or "Hairdressers Lung".

Merino fibres and paper fibres break down a hell of lot quicker than human hair.

While I agree, in principle, that 3m make very good masks (I have a 7000 series half face respirator, that is the bomb for sanding and working with other aerosolised particulates), I think there is too much faith in a product rather than the proper use of the product.

Have you had the specific model fitted to your face?

The missus went through a fit test protocol, with a range of models until they found a mask that doesn't fail visual and sensitivity tests.

She also had to do in-depth training on fitting/removal and hand hygiene.

And don't forget about pairing up with tight fitting goggles!

From my perspective, anything short of a full-face/helmet respirator isn't going to stop catching the virus in close quarters.

A surgical mask, and most disposable masks can be pretty effective at suppressing transmission of particulates. And offer some protection from inhaling particulates that are mainly hitting your mask.

So ordered and received this week a bigger mask Aropec Reusable 3-Layer Face Mask with ViralOff Technology from marine-deals.co.nz, So we are happy but haven't done the first hand wash yet.

How did you find these after first wash?  How often do you wash them? I see they're good for 50 washes so do you just throw away after that?

My partner, who is in office and on road bus driver trainer, wears his on average 9 hours per day, 4 days a week, so we wash his on the Saturday and hang to dry till Monday morning. Myself it just depends upon my usage during the week. Like today I was in CountDown and had a sneezing fit, so straight into wash and the spare one hauled out.

Warm/hot wash only no detergent as per this Consumer NZ here:

Wash your disposable masks, experts say

Group of Kiwi researchers say you can wash a disposable mask 10 times and they still filter better than cloth ones.

That's true but also a tiny bit disingenuous since almost everything filters better than a cloth mask. This is why, at the vax location I went to, they were handing out disposable masks to anyone who turned up with a non-disposable mask and asking them to put them on over the top of whatever they were currently wearing.

More likely because they can't ensure the DIY ones standard of forward leakage. or could be as useless as the bandannas and buffs I've seen people wear

I see Matt etc keep bringing up experts and cloth masks. Yet the WHO, Government here, COP26.

They're all wearing manufactured cloth or neoprene ones when on TV, doing interviews, talking about the pandemic and measures to stop it. Not surgical ones.

For times I've worn them, they seem to blow un caught air and breath out the sides and top more than my triple layer opposing pressed stitch seamed sealed one that sucks in/out with every breath.

Just did a bit of a cheat and searched the thread for mention of beards - no such luck.

Anyone come across a good solution for those of us with warm chins and an aversion to razors?

Wouldn't that depend on what type of cloth, whether it has high thread density?
