So as others have pointed out, new cases reported today are not from today - they could have been active for a while before being added to the overall tally.

If you've been tracking the Worldometer stats, Russia has gone from down in the noise to the group of worst-hit countries (> 100K cases) in around a week or two. You could follow the increase in cases with the increase in testing, the two pretty much tracked each other. Deaths are still relatively low but I assume that's because of the latency rather than because they'll stay low.

"based on fear is crazy" isn't quite the same level of accuracy and attitude. In a few days the infection rate will be equal to NZ population. Doesnt seem long ago that China's 80,000 was mind boggling. West Coast mayor needs to stop venting

I guess Bruce Smith has a reasonable point when he says that the numbers of unemployed should be read out along with the numbers of new cases. After all, we are dealing with two crises at the moment.

Something that might be interesting,

Before you have an N95 mask or some other PPE like gowns you have Melt Blown Fiber as a raw material.Filtering is not just the small gaps created by the random fibers but electrostatic effect this material has to attract particles that might slip by.

Taiwan reported recently its ambition to move to production of 20M Masks a day was foiled , maybe 15M per day is limit due to hitting limit on Melt Blown Fiber as well as spare parts to keep machines churning.

So where does this come from , story on one place.

Yangzhong, a tiny island in eastern China, was largely known for its culinary take on puffer fish before the coronavirus pandemic.

You are correct there are two crises at the moment.

There are some other numbers that probably should be read out too. Things like suicide statistics, domestic violence statistics, business closure statistics, etc etc.

If 90% of them never had covid, then what about the other 10%? IMO they were best not to use percentages like that, or at least use the correct percentage. Someone reading that may think that 10% of their population had covid based on what was reported.

My understanding is that because NZ is a country of travelers, and some of these clusters actually had the people in the cluster dispersed all throughout the country, that the virus could be silently spreading anywhere. Just because they may not have had a case, doesn't mean someone, or a group doesn't have it who doesn't have symptoms.Likewise someone may just not want to get tested, maybe fearing the test, and will just try and to get over it.

Hence why we are in level 3, to mop up any of these cases. These people need to watch the press conferences and get reporters to ask the questions. I think the reporters asked the right questions today, including about that funeral and the beach urinators, and it appears the politicians are seeing those people flouting the rules on social media. I think it is time for a zero tolerance on that sort of thing. As we have seen with a wedding, events of 100 or so people potentially can cause a major major problem with spreading this, and also lead to deaths.

I would be more open to opening towns to level 2 if all people in the town were all tested, and they didn't leave the town, but the fact is that people will and need to travel out of the town. The PM talked abut the Wairarapa as an example, and many in the Wairarapa travel over to Wellington, and likewise many from Wellington travel over to the Wairarapa to work, so it isn't easy to 'isolate' the Wairarapa at level 2, without having some form of restriction at the border. So it effectively makes that town or region even more isolated, if an area is at level 2, but all areas surrounding it are at level 3. It would probably be easier in reverse, if NZ moves out of level 2, but keeps some towns or regions in level 3

You are correct there are two crises at the moment.

There are some other numbers that probably should be read out too. Things like suicide statistics, domestic violence statistics, business closure statistics, etc etc.

They could also read out positive effects, such as road toll numbers, pollution reduction stats etc, but this is mainly a MOH briefing.

The government have put into place, and will continue to put into place, things to help businesses and people. It is a long term thing Today they doubled the energy payment to older people. Haven't seen much mention of that. We have to remember that NZ is also well placed, and we aren't like other countries, that are now forced into lockdown for many months, with far more restrictions on their movement. We all should have known that there were going to need to be a few months needed to mop up this covid mess, if we are to eliminate the virus from NZ, and then get back to a normal domestic society again, which is something most other countries won't be able to do until a vaccine comes along .

We have friends in the UK and they effectively can't leave their house for at 6 weeks, and they are also restricted in the amount of time they can spend outside. I wonder what the mental health effects are over there, because it doesn't seem there is much light at the end of the tunnel over there. It is likely it will be far longer over there, and they may have up to 8 waves of covid, and have to go in and out of lockdowns to control cases. This was essentially as a result of thinking that life and business could continue as normal. We don't want to open our border to any country that hasn't also eliminated the virus for short term gain, but risking long term pain down the track..We do have to remember that this is effectively a war taking place on our home front, and some wars take a long time to resolve.

Those masks allow higher airflow, don't know how universal this is but I've seen them referred to as F2 valves vs. the standard F1 valves. They're for people doing heavy (or heavier) labour resulting in them breathing heavily. F2's are fine for normal work since you're worried about breathing in particulates, but obviously not useful when the point of the mask is to protect others from you.

Pretty nasty video from the Xinhua News Agency, a widely known as being a propagandistic mouthpiece of the Chinese government.

They seemed to have forgot the part about the Chinese government allowing "wet markets" even after SARS and H5N1 avian flu, thereby releasing yet another devastating zoonotic virus upon the world.

But it's not completely wrong about the US response.

He is being pressured by his constituents. I see no issue if his area is made L2. BUT, there can be no travel into there.
