Bolsonaro Fights for Survival, Turning to Empowered Military Elders

A flailing leader has given Brazil’s generals an opening to insert themselves onto the front lines of politics.

...The pandemic has left Mr. Bolsonaro especially vulnerable. Brazil is quickly becoming a global hot spot, and this week surpassed the number of deaths reported by China. Yet the president has continued to resist calls for stricter quarantines and displayed little empathy for the more than 6,300 Brazilians who have died, setting off widespread criticism that he has been reckless and callous.

“So what? Sorry, but what do you want me to do?” he said this week of the mounting death toll, before making a joke about his middle name. “My name is Messiah, but I can’t work miracles.”
...
The president’s office declined interviews this week. But as Mr. Bolsonaro has become radioactive for much of the political establishment in the capital, Brasília, diplomats and political scientists have begun to game out how much upheaval the generals who serve in senior positions will tolerate.

The Bolsonaro era has given Brazil’s generals an opening to insert themselves back into the front lines of politics, a role they last played during the country’s 21-year military dictatorship, which ended in 1985.

Active and former military officials currently hold nine of the 22 cabinet positions, including three that operate out of the presidential palace. Those perches have given Brazil’s military broad authority over issues like fiscal policy, development in the Amazon and the response to the pandemic.
...
Shortly after Mr. Bolsonaro fired his health minister on April 17 — after complaining about the minister’s strong endorsement of social distancing measures — the vice president smirked as he told journalists, “Everything is under control: We just don’t know whose.”
...
The president’s erratic handling of the coronavirus, which he has called a “measly cold,” has tested the resilience of his online supporters, Mr. Ruediger said.

But one base that appears to be steadfast is Evangelical Christians, who supported Mr. Bolsonaro staunchly during the campaign.

Mr. Bolsonaro in recent days has nodded to the issues that animate that constituency by reminding them of his opposition to abortion and by falsely claiming that the World Health Organization promotes homosexuality and encourages toddlers to masturbate.

“All the major leaders of Evangelical churches in Brazil, all of them continue supporting him in the same way,” Silas Malafaia, the leader of one of the country’s megachurches, said in an interview. “Bolsonaro will only lose our support if he ends up being personally embroiled in corruption.”

Today we are extending our bubble to share some time with parents-in-law.

I was also tested this week (sore throat and despite being inside the house for six weeks I was asked by Healthline to test). The result was negative.

They just didn't test you for the thing you have...!

I have to say that even when we are in L2 - and perhaps even L1 - I won't be changing my social behaviour a great deal anyway.

I work from home as it is, so no change there except my wife will go to the office and leave me in peace (oops - did I say that aloud? Inner voice..) ☺️

I spent about 1% of my life in cafes and bars per annum before Covid and won't be changing that either. There are no takeaways round here really so ditto that.

Countdown delivery has worked well and we may actually just keep doing that.

I really cannot think of much I will be doing differently - except not feeling that I cannot go and do something when I want to, I suppose.

Under Level 3, people are still uncertain about how far they can drive their cars to go to beaches, parks etc. Police are asking people to stay “local”, which is supported by the covid-19.govt.nz web site:

How far can I drive to do a recreation activity?

You should drive as short a distance as you can, and still do the activity. You must stay local.

Your nearest recreational area could mean travelling to a neighbouring region if you live on a regional boundary, as long as this is still local and a close distance to your home. Travel to your nearest park or beach, not your favourite one.

But a lot of people aren’t staying “local” as discussed in this article:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12329152

From the above:

Police have been turning people away from a small beach community as hordes of Aucklanders seek to make the most of the first weekend at alert level 3.

Traffic began to build approaching summer levels at Muriwai Beach yesterday, with a fine weather forecast and excellent surfing on offer.

Under alert level 3 the rules on travel have been slightly relaxed, allowing people to travel "locally" to areas for recreation, including beaches.

By yesterday afternoon police stepped in to control the crowds, setting up a police checkpoint in Waimauku about 20 minutes drive from the beach, to make sure people travelling towards the coast were safe and adhering to Alert Level 3 restrictions.

Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan said police put the checkpoint in place after concerns about overcrowding on the road into Muriwai, due to a number of local parking areas being closed.

"When it comes to outdoor exercise and recreation we are asking people to stay local, apply common sense and not do anything that could risk injury or require search and rescue services.

But, as Cherie Jameson asked on Twitter:

“Is there a distance restriction on travel? It’s [Muriwai Beach] about 40km from the city. Perhaps a 30km radius for all personal travel.”

Pete Griffin answered this by saying:

“30km radius from Muriwai actually still gets to downtown Auckland central. New Lynn is less than 25km. Would have to be a pretty small circle to exclude meaningful numbers of people.”

So far, the term “local” isn’t defined in the Health Act (COVID-19 Alert Level 3) Order 2020, which does allow a person to leave their home or place of residence for the purpose of exercise or other recreation if it is done in an outdoor place appropriate for that kind of exercise or recreation that is readily accessible (including by using their vehicle) from their home or place of residence (and, in any case, is within the same or an adjacent region) etc ....

How about some common sense and personal responsibility? Instead of looking for ways to cut corners or stretch the rules as far as possible, just accept that the rules are there for a reason and look for the nearest patch of green for a circular stroll instead of a more distant beach everyone else is trying to get to.

Really sick of people trying to find loopholes. If you have a beach five minutes away and another one 45 minutes away you know which one is local.

If the only beach is 45 minutes away then it is not local and don't go there.

Not hard but some people are just idiots.

100% I dunno why this defining local gets raised and raised so much by some people. Agree, it would be quite good that local is 5.024 Km...  /s  Or 9.653 Km.  :-)

5 km seems really sensible especially for the cities. In rural areas like wot I live in you have plenty of open space anyway.

Yeah, its just common sense. But as we see here, if we place a km limit then there are 34 exceptions. Use common sense, as MF's example showed.

Confirmation from Taiwan of what was widely suspected.

Taiwan News:

The study showed the most infectious period was in the very early stages of the disease or even before the onset of symptoms. Additionally, the report suggested the pandemic will not be controlled if only symptomatic cases are isolated.

If the local population were already trading in the suspect bats why is the most likely source of the virus an escape from a specialist laboratory?

Trump is trying to blame poor intel from WHO but his own agencies were warning that sometning serious was happening and they seemed to be ignored. The fact that Chinese Government proxies were buying up ppe and medical supplies world wide and freighting it back to China should have been blindingly obvious.

As we already know, flouting is more widespread than L4 was. Its easy to imagine many social gatherings in the back yard, out of sight, over a few beers. Whose to know?
