I'm sure Bloomfield said the person died earlier than expected so they applied on the 12th and it was fast tracked so they could leave ASAP

They arrived on the 7th, planning to spend the full 14days in quarantine, but the relative dies on the 12th, so they drive to Wellington on the 13th to help prepare the funeral....

The world is still awash with COVID, it will wash up here, and to expect it all to be stopped in Hotel rooms in Auckland is unrealistic...

what we need to demonstrate is that the systems for containment, tracking and tracing work to ringfence any outbreak and prevent any widespread transmission...

Yeah it will come out they stopped somewhere along the way, 800km trip without a stop is complete b/s.

I am so mad this has been able to happen, 14 days quarantine then test full stop no exceptions. 

So many people have lost so much and made so many sacrifices for this to happen is just beyond belief. There should be no acceptance or play down of this happening, oh we are still learning crap. Some body or bodies should be taking full responsibility about this it is just not acceptable under any circumstances.

It would seem to be unravelling on us. If we don't get control now then the second wave will be in a matter of days. It is time for complete transparency but the government. We have risked too much to allow idiots to screw it up and that includes officials.

I guess "We have got this" is now "we had this" or "we screwed this" 

rugrat: Imports and exports are safe. Virus can only live for so long without host.
Anything that no one has touched for 3 days should be safe, and I believe with cardboard 12 hours.
It’s only incoming people who are the greatest risks.

If filling hotels with overseas people is the greatest priority then business that thrive on NZ customers will suffer.

Ashley Bloomfield was asked about this, commented that they did not stop at public facility - implied that they stopped to pee on the side of the road.

My diesel ute will easily do >1,000km on a tank on the open road.  Petrol cars - not likely.

That said, given the potential cost in human lives and massive economic cost if we have to lock down again, what happened seems incredibly dumb.

If you flew all the way from the UK to attend a funeral, you might be inclined to not want to miss the funeral if you had a bit of a sore throat, cough, whatever.

The UK is an extremely high-risk - the case fatality rate of 14% suggests that they're only finding ~7% of cases by testing, and you can extrapolate that 6% of the population either had - or currently has - C19.

The 100 or so coming in from the UK for the America's cup race - it's almost certain that they'll bring cases.  Shouldn't be happening IMO - they should postpone the AC for a year.
