Yeah it will come out they stopped somewhere along the way, 800km trip without a stop is complete b/s.

Auckland-Welly is ~650Km, and the DG of Health basically said they "Sh*t in the woods"

Unless NZ 100% isolates itself people will travel to and from the country. There's going to be incidents, it's fairly naive to expect anything else.

Not naive, this was completely avoidable

There will also be future avoidable incidents. Once there are people involved stuff goes wrong.

@Fred99 I drove from Auckland (North Shore) to Wellington (CBD) on a single tank of gas in a new Commodore about 2003  and I only stopped once to Pee on the side of the road

Fuel light was no even on when I arrived in Wellington CBD

Yep.  Let's hope they're telling the truth - though one of them may not have been up-front about symptoms.

If they feel sad about the possibility of missing a funeral, they'll be feeling a hell of a lot sadder if they're responsible for killing other people.

And the fewer people we let in, the safer we'll be.

You rapidly run into the "Perfect is the enemy of the good" problem,

Sure we can wall NZ off, but you end up throwing pretty much 80% of the Tourism sector under a bus, along with big chunks of Hospo and retail in Tourist areas....

They're under the bus anyway - as far as foreign tourists go - until there's a vaccine.  Nothing we can do about it - so may as well stay walled off until there's a vaccine or treatment.

They're largely gone anyway. International tourism inbound or outbound) won't be a thing for NZ under the current situation.

It was more in reference to OZ....

Who will probably not be impressed by this debacle, if mutually agreed quarantine standards are to be enforced both sides of the Tasman.

I don't we need to worry about that, they have pretty horrible lapses too.

A Fruitpicker from VIC being granted entry to QLD, who then take two flights, and stops off for a bit of a family knees up on the way through, oh and he was a known contact of a diagnosed case in Melbourne before he travelled...

rugrat: Imports and exports are safe. Virus can only live for so long without host.
Anything that no one has touched for 3 days should be safe, and I believe with cardboard 12 hours.
It’s only incoming people who are the greatest risks.

If filling hotels with overseas people is the greatest priority then business that thrive on NZ customers will suffer.

I think it's Kiwis and residents.

Agree that we will never achieve a "water tight border" so we must have the best contact facing system in place that we can.

Currently we have the public health units at both regional and national level and I am think that they do a good job but their work would be easier and faster as I see it if everyone used the COVID-19 app and scanned the QR codes at all places they visit in a day.

But to date my experience has been that there are still very few QR codes to scan - this must become compulsory for all business to display - getting a QR code is now dead easy so there is no excuse - I agree that previously it was not easy but this has been sorted.

Lets suppose that these 2 people did stop for coffee and toilet stop somewhere between Auckland and Wellington - they would scan the QR code at the coffee stop and then everyone else that stops there will also scan the QR code and when it is discovery they are positive cases - all others who have scanned in at the coffee shop will get a notification to contact the public health unit - much easier than the public health unit having to try and track them down.

We must start using the app and businesses must start displaying QR codes. Its not hard nor a big ask for the potential benefit to all.
