Arrived from Italy

She is in self-isolation at home, with clinical support, does not need hospital help.

The woman's partner is also showing symptoms.

The flight was an Air New Zealand flight from Singapore to Auckland on 26 February. Other passengers are being contacted.

The woman also took two domestic flights from Palmerston North and Auckland and back again.

Two health providers and two schools are also being contacted for possible contact with the woman. There are West Lake Boy's and Girl's schools in Auckland.

Second case in NZ, more shortly. Imported, same aircraft I reckon

Different aircraft, she came from Italy via Singapore last week (25th).

Then, she flew to Palmerston North and back on Monday.

Her and her partner are self quarantined, with support from Public Health officials.

Yep. And you can see why, now.

Voluntary self isolation doensnt work. This second case arrived here from Italy via Singapore. A week later flew to AKL and back, went to two medical centres, two schools. Now she has it, NOW she is in self isolation. Now we have passengers on two flights to manage, two schools to manage and two medical centres. Plus where she went in Palmy. If she had gone to self isolation upon arriving here, get a mask at AKL airport, get home to Palmy, she would still be case No.2 but unlikely to have potentially spread it around. And when we import a few cases like this and have no community spread, that woukld be quite comforting. But its not like that here

But there was no requirement on her to self isolate when she arrived from Italy,, ( on 25th Feb) ,

NZ only required self isolation from 2 March on those from Italy /Korea,  ( Monday)... So its a bit rough to slam it as a failure of self isolation, when it wasn't required.

As an aside, the Korea self isolations will be less of a problem now, Korean Air just pulled its direct flight to Auckland.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the W.H.O. - in his media briefing today - asked the public to stop buying and hoarding surgical masks and N95 respirators.

He talked about "severe and increasing disruption to the global supply of personal protective equipment – caused by rising demand, hoarding and misuse."

It looks as though that might've started a rush on supplies around the world to buy those items before they run out..
3M says it's Aberdeen, South Dakota plant - that produces N95 masks - has increased production from a five-day schedule to a seven-day schedule, and can't match demand.

I realise that Italy was only recently added as a high level risk. Is the Ministry of Health Pandemic document that I assume governs this, mean that if you come in from China, you must self isolate but if you come in from any other infected country, don't bother?

Time for us to get used to having this virus around. I suspect in the coming months panic will ease and it'll just be part of life.

It's like terrorism, sadly - can't get rid of it, but need to keep living life.

Not so easy when one is in a high risk group.

Yes. It should not enter via China, Italy or South Korea now, but free entry from the other 45 affected countries, leaving the over 50's disadvantaged as carriers wont know they are carriers until the 4th shop at Countdown

Quite wrong.

As it spreads we all need to be more vigilant as we cant expect to be able to visit our GP and our hospitals will be full. This virus will only be an issue for the next 12 months or so....

Panic wont ease in the coming months as it will get much worse especially with the winter woes on us as well. Expect some real harsh government measures in the coming weeks (if this government does its job properly).

Totally understand. However it's like all viruses out there, we need to take precautions. Can't do anything more unless a vaccine is available.

Yes I guess so. Think the worst part will be that the elderly & vulnerable will have to isolate themselves or run the gauntlet. Further I can see them

having to do this until a vaccine is sorted. This could take a year or so.

I live in an area with a disproportionately high number of elderly. They love being out in the community. I can see being asked to sit at home all the time is not

going to be easy.

I have more confidence in a vaccine being developed than this government doing its job.

A working treatment will be found long before a vaccine is found, tested, approved, manufactured, distributed and administered.
