Pfizer and BioNTech Granted FDA Emergency Use Authorization of Omicron BA.4/BA.5-Adapted Bivalent COVID-19 Vaccine Booster for Ages 12 Years and Older

from this article

https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-biontech-granted-fda-emergency-use-authorization

I wonder if we will get this variant approved to use here?

The answers is likely yes,

But the question un answered is, are they that much better?  initial studies aren't that positive.... but the study samples on both side are not really big enough... This is a pre-print study ( un peer reviewed.. but none the less)

"New Omicron-specific vaccines offer similar protection to existing boosters
Updated COVID jabs have been approved in the United States and United Kingdom, but they offer roughly the same protection as existing vaccines, a study suggests." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-02806-5

Update: Household contact is feeling a bit better, but she is still testing positive after one week and still has some symptoms. She also appears to have lost her sense of taste. Ordered groceries from Countdown a second time, ticked the "allow substitutes" option and ended up with a Big Ben pie, so won't be doing that again. No one else in the household tested positive on day seven, so our week of isolation appears to be over.

A Big Ben pie instead of what?

The original order was for a MacKenzie pie - Steak, Mushroom and Ale, and Countdown gave me a Big Ben mince pie as a substitute. In any case, a minor complaint compared to having Covid for more than a week. She will test again tomorrow.

I had my 5th Covid vaccination on Saturday and really feeling it today. I have swollen Gland, aching chest and arm and feeling quite jaded and yuck.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

May be an ironic good sign. In my family, only my wife has reacted badly to COVID vaccinations. Kids and I have not had any major issues with them. However... everyone apart from my wife has subsequently caught COVID. Based on our non statistically significant sample, a reaction to vaccination suggests that the vaccination works.

Correct, the vaccine is doing its job training the immune system, just feel like it's working overtime, it needs to take a tea break

I reacted quite badly to all of my vaccine shots. I also got struck down quite badly when I contracted Covid. I think its generally accepted that a strong reaction to the vaccine doesn't indicate anything.

Make that 2.

Anyway I'm not sure if without the vaccine my omicron (presumably) covid would be same, worse or better (unlikely).

Iirc vaccine was for original strain.

Yeah i'm on the opposite end.  Had no reactions to any of my 3 vaccines and havent caught Covid yet (although been exposed numerous times as family members, workmates have had it)

TBH, until you have a blood test you will never know for sure... its reported up to 30 per cent of cases are asymptomatic

NZ's modelling is based around double the total reposted case numbers

You can't freely get an antibody test unless it's 'indicated'.

As a family with Doctor in primary care, and 2 school age kids, we are wondering if we had it and didn't get symptoms, but none of our literally dozens of tests throughout the pandemic have shown even weak positives.

Yeah, There is a national prevalence study going on now, so hopefully in a month or two we will have a greater degree of certainty around the actual population incidence , but yes, if you want a blood test you have to get it done privately and pay (if you can even find a provider)

This fifth vaccination shot is doing a real number on me. The Chevy pain has increased quite a significantly over the last 24 hours and I feel absolutely shattered. Never had this with the previous shots.

It's also not a true indicator. False negatives are non-zero. It's at around 73% efficacy.

I suggest you call Healthline immediately for them to assess if it could be a serious reason to go to hospital and get checked. You don’t want to be having a heart issue from it and leave it unattended.

With due consideration to those who, because of personal circumstance, are apprehensive at the latest relaxation of restrictions.

I have found it uplifting being able to see people’s faces again and particularly their smiles.
