Really mad that this is the default expectation after years of finger-wagging about how we can't just 'let it rip'. We've just decentralised the problem away from government and are making households carry the burden. Again.

IIRC there issue was too many lockdowns, too many restrictions, and so on. Now, "everyone" should be vaccinated or herd immunity. so the heavy restrictions are nw released. While I do feel for you, and I do, the line was drawn between mass sickness, and mass economic downturn. Its quite clear  that Covid is on the rose as expected, but vaxxes and herd immunity are in place now. Not the ideal solution but there is no ideal solution

I am not sure "herd immunity" works for a disease that can reinfect someone multiple times.

Yes, that is now what has been learnt. Typically it gives immunity, but the mass variants are an issue, as a vaccine can protect against variants as it targets "Covid" but herd immunity protects against "that" variant. Not the others. There is no solution for that now as the public will not wear restrictions

I read yesterday that even though vexed, multiple infections can cause long term issues. Irregardless of vaccine and herd immunity

There is no putting this genie back in the bottle.  And yes scientifically repeated infections do lead to further heard immunity.  Common colds caused by Coronaviruses and Rhinoviruses adapt and heard immunity offers further protection against that strain, making it less likely you will spread it, or have as severe symptoms.  Statistically Covid19 is likely to become less severe as time goes by and will become endemic.

Talking to other peoples recent points.  I agree mask mandates are a smart idea when there are outbreaks of Covid19, but equally you are fully within your rights wear N95 and protect yourself if you so wish, and yet how many of you are actively walking around wearing these?  With normalised human behaviour we are less likely to see severe cases of other respiratory illnesses (RSV for example), in fact there is science to suggest a protective mechanism of some of these prevalent and common viruses.

But we haven't gotten the vaccine bit 'in place'. The 2nd booster is still restricted to certain groups, and now the people who got Covid at the start of the year will have waning immunity to this current wave, and all the risk that comes with repeated infections.

If you're not part of an at risk group, your options at this point are basically regress totally into a hermit lifestyle or just cop infection after infection. That's a choice we're making with our current policy settings.

More's the pity as far as I'm concerned but I'm genuinely furious this gets portrayed as somehow active management of the situation when it means my son ends up getting infected at the start of his young life. He'll live with any side-effects a lot longer than I'll have to.

So far little man has no symptoms other than a mark on his cheek from vaulting backwards off the coffee table yesterday the second I took my eye off him.

So thankful for that so far, but quietly fearful of long-term consequences for us all.

Despite all previous caution, I "caught" it for the first time in mid-October after more than 2.5 years and promptly "took care of" Mrs. Dr. Tinkerisk, who then unfortunately dropped out as medical staff. We both stayed isolated at home, took it easy for a week and had a mild course with no permanent impairments (we are completely vaccinated dissimillary with different vaccines). After 10 days, the spook was over and were fully fit for work again.

My symptoms were those of a normal flu, but had no pain or inflammation, just complete loss of taste and smell, fever at night, tiredness and slight hearing impairment. My son was with me a few hours before the first symptoms but he wasn‘t affected at all (and nobody else except Mrs. Tinkerisk).

Definitely herd immunity does not work here. A young schoolgirl among my acquaintances has just been re-infected for the 6th time (but the course was always mild).

Well…I avoided it for two and a half years. Until today.

Was feeling lousy yesterday and tested negative.
Got up this morning feeling even worse after a terrible night and tested positive.
Now stuck isolating when I should be both working and packing to move to our temp accommodation this weekend.
Renovations start next week.

Great timing.

Yep - a friend of mine has just tested positive for the 3rd time - 1'st time was late last year.

There is a bunch of it still going round.

It seems to be getting worse here. There is talk of a new wave.

It seems to be getting worse here. There is talk of a new wave.

Or that the "wave" may nearly peaked already

"University of Auckland computational biologist Dr David Welch said there were suggestions we could be at the peak, or “hopefully coming down the other side”"
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/300732753/covid19-signs-wave-could-be-close-to-the-peak-with-20802-cases-in-past-week

Or,  it still all on,

Epidemiologist Michael Baker said hospitalisation rates were reaching the same level they were between the first and second wave.  It was an ongoing, important threat to New Zealand, he said.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/checkpoint/audio/2018865847/expert-wants-graded-response-as-third-wave-covid-19-cases-rise

Or... No one really knows what's going on...

"Baker said we should be looking to Australia, where masks were still required on public transport and domestic flights."

I think Baker is incorrect about masks being required on PT and domestic flights.
