Also if you're in the Coromandel, Queenstown or Taupo, mask up. We're coming, whether you want us there or not.

I think I would’ve been more at ease if Auckland was at l3 for at lest another week but I don’t think Auckland would’ve complied with it l2.5 is a compromise we have to live with and hope it’s the right one

I don't necessarily have an issue with Auckland moving down to level 2.5. But I think it would be wise for the border to remain closed for another infection cycle to at least see how big the mini clusters will get, considering they don't appear to have tested all possible people yet. Some experts have already said that infections have the potential to rise undr level 2.  The rest of NZ shouldn't really be at level 2 according to the level requirements, as we have no evidence of community transmission, but the only way to manage this is to have the border closed between a level 2.5 area, and a level 1.5 area.

I agree it probably would’ve been good too keep border closed to see what happens with the mini cluster and I don’t think it would of hurt with l2.5 and l1.5 with the border closed for the 14 days

morrisk:
MOH: We are working with the broader health sector to carry out 70,000 tests over the next week across the country. This is an important part of our surveillance to help us identify the extent of the recent outbreak in Auckland, and any undetected community transmission.

Google pegs that text at three days ago along with the associated south and west auckland text. It's looking like SM engagement picked it up a few days later for some reason.

Anyways looks like the intention always was/is to test to capacity over the next seven days and the initial bump might have helped unintentionally and hopefully has not pushed out results too much. Current advice:

My prediction, three months, CT across the country.

Mask up, social distance, let's manage this the best we can.

And look after our elderly.

I suspect level 3 for Auckland again and perhaps some other cities within the next month. But hope I am wrong. If we go back up a level it has to be early otherwise we could become another Victoria.

How big does a cluster have to get, and how many mini clusters before they are treated as separate clusters? It appears this is just being treated as a single cluster, which appears to be one justification for moving down a level.

man I hope you’re wrong but I’m with you we just got to hope it not lurking in the community we’re not going to know until it’s too late I think it would of been best to keep the border closed for another 14 day at l2.5

I'm a realist. To keep Aotearoa Covid free we would have needed pristine controls across all aspects of the border that never fell below operating at 100% at any time - the virus is that incidious. Probably impossible to achieve indefinitely and, let's face it, was tasked to MoH who are average at best in normal conditions; let alone being required to gear up at no notice to manage a massive task that would have challenged even the best of the best.

On the positive, we did better than most countries in keeping the virus at bay for as long as we did. Now we have to do better than most at managing it in the community. I reckon we are up for it.

Some real doom and gloom in the last couple of posts. I know I'm an optimist optimist so naturally see the better outcome, but some facts support this see well.

NSW is managing to keep there covid outburst under control. It's bubbling along at 10 or so a day and I'd like to think we are in a better position than they are.

Most people try and do the right thing do expect a high compliance with the rules. Yes there will be idiots, but they should be significantly outweighed by the good guys.

Not doom and gloom, just realism now that CT is with us and likely to remain. But I reckon as a country we can manage better than others, so I'm an optimist as well.

One thing concerns me, apparently the authorities still don't know how/where this cluster started. Without that information how can we be confident there won't be another outbreak/cluster. If you don't know the source how do you plug the gap?

I just don't know what to think after today..

Am I disappointed that Auckland doesn't stay in lockdown for longer - yep
Was I expecting Auckland to stay in lockdown for longer - nope

I am a bit of a negative person, so I can only see one outcome from today's announcement - another lockdown across the country by the end of the month
I really hope I am wrong.

Why aren't masks needed on Inter Island ferries? Do they think that the virus doesn't like water?

This feels like a real risk. Imo a test capacity of 10K a day is not enough for the Covid world.

in my mind a ferry is still public transport, does it only apply to planes/trains/buses/rideshare?
