We filter drinking water. Just changed 3-stage filter. Auckland. Greenlane.

 

See by yourself - first stage is brown, second combo stage is brown as well.

If this is town supply then you really shouldn't need the first stage.  If that's capturing solids then you have real problems!

Large parts of Auckland still use cast iron or steel pipes. And there are also lots of houses that also still have galvanized steel pipes as well. And in virtually all areas, the pipes are way oversized for normal usage, due to being sized to feed fire hydrants. Which means things like vibrations from road works can stir up sediment.

So depending on where in Auckland you live - Perfectly normal.
