I had my wisdom teeth yanked out of my skull last week, and I still can't eat and am in a bit of pain. I've been living off protein shakes and pumpkin soup since Tuesday. How long is this supposed to last?

I'm more just venting than anything, but wouldn't mind hearing other peoples experiences. Today is the first day I don't feel like I'm in quite a bit of pain (though I did take a paracetamol this morning). They were just my lowers that were sitting sideways in my jaw. I don't remember anything from the surgery, but boy do I miss food. My uppers are right on my sinuses so they didn't want to take them out and hope they never move down.

I guess I just wanted to vent a bit or something. Feel free to express your dental woes below!

top or bottom?

top should heal in few hours and eat anything next day.

bottom is another story, could be weeks, could be infection, I'd check with doctor, if after a week you still feel the pain.

These were just the bottoms, top are intact, there's no odd taste so I don't think it's infected. They had me on antibiotics for 3 days prior. The pain has definitely lessened each day, and the swelling is mostly gone which is good. I looked like a chipmunk lol

If you have only just started taking paracetemol, then the pain is probably typical.  I tend to take pain relief from the start - I think it's much better to keep it steady, rather than taking it sporadically.

I had a dental implant last Wednesday, my second in five years (both covered under ACC fortunately!).  It was done under sedation which is fantastic - short term amnesia means I don't remember anything from the time the needle went in until about 30 minutes after getting home, despite being "conscious" throughout the operation.  The tooth itself was extracted 4 months ago (also under sedation), and was right near the left hand sinus.  The surgeon was a little concerned about the risk of damaging the sinus, but he's very good at his job, and packed the site with artificial bone growth material to support the site healing in anticipation of the implant.  He prescribed ibuprofen 800mg to take twice a day, plus paracetemol and antibiotics 4 x a day, and an antiseptic mouthwash (plus soft toothbrush) to aid healing.  I've had no pain at all.  It's a completely different experience to root canal work I had done as little as 10 years ago, where I was in pain for several days after.

I've had four wisdom teeth pulled, but they were all over 10 years ago.  The top ones were "easy" - just crowbarred out of the jaw, and a lot of aching/tenderness for a couple of days.  The bottom ones were a bit harder, but they still only hurt for a couple of days.  Mind you, I only ever had one out at a time.  I can imagine two at once might be a bit worse.

Sorry, I've been taking pain meds since the time they were out, I've slowed them down quite a bit though. The right one had erupted after being impacted. They decided to pull both the right and left at once, under sedation. Last thing I remembered was them asking if I was Canadian (I'm from the norther part of the US), then remember waking up and saying they did a good job lol. I was very very nervous. I had a bad experience with having a tooth pulled where the doctor (in the US) didn't realize the root had grown under the tooth behind it. He nearly dislocated my jaw when he was trying to pull it.

They ended up chopping the left into pieces to get it out, which is the side that's given me the most pain. The right (erupted) side was pretty easy from what they said. Unfortunately this wasn't under ACC, total cost was around $2,500. It's my Christmas and birthday present for the next couple of years I'm sure lol. These were right on the nerve, so the surgeon was nervous about that, but it seems to be okay. No numbness, just the residual pain. I might try to eat something like pasta today, it would be the first day after nothing but protein shakes, ice cream, pumpkin soup and meds for the past 5ish days lol.

I had 4 removed earlier in the year.. and it took about two months to be completely pain free.. My pain was coming from my jaw.. not the site of the removed teeth. My bill would have been $6.5K apparently,  but was covered by Southern Cross.

Not much fun really.. It does get better though.

Mine took well over a month to go down. No food the whole time. Was great for weight loss, but it was a real pain (literally).

Some people I know have been fine after a day or two though, so it really seems to differ between people.

I had all 4 yanked at the same time. I found for a week I could not eat some foods.

Stuff that helps also - Alcohol free mouthwash.

Yikes!  Have been currently experiencing pain with one of my upper molars - which I assume is related to my wisdom tooth... not looking forward to visiting the dentist and hearing the (financial) damage!

Weirdly though, it seems fine today..

That pain seems similar to what I'm currently experiencing. It's more my jaw than the actual site of the cuts/stitches.

Well, I need the weight loss so at least some good will come of it (other than not having to worry about them anymore that is). Sounds like quite a few people have about a month of jaw pain.

They gave me some mouthwash to use, which doesn't taste that great. They said once it's gone to use salt water for another week, then go back to "normal" mouthwash. I'll find some alcohol free stuff, I don't think I have any around currently, great advice I wouldn't have thought of until the first time I tried to use it!

The only issue I've had, is chewing my cheeks up during my sleep. It's gotten better now that the swelling is down a bit, but I woke up a few times and had chewed holes in the interior of my cheeks. I nearly got a mouth guard to sleep with.

I went in as soon as one popped through. It's much better (and cheaper) to get taken care of before they become a major issue!

If only it was covered properly like other things. A friend is trying to get SC to cover him and they're not playing ball. Taking months now by requesting info from GP/dentist while he's in sporadic pain. Dentist quoted him 6k without insurance which he can't take right now.

There was an article recently stating there is discussion about dental being covered like other healthcare is. I certainly hope it happens. Apparently, it's cheaper to fly to Thailand to have them done there, than it is to have them done here, however, I don't know that I would personally go for that option.

I enjoyed 2 weeks of no solids, unable to laugh or grin and a range of other wonderful things!
I also had a minor dry socket.. Not a nice experience.
I found I started to eat by using my tongue to swuash food against my front teeth or roof of mouth. Got rather efficient with chips, pasta, bread etc by the end of it. Grapes go down whole pretty easy..

Had my top and bottom removed all in one go. My bottom tooth also broke into pieces like you. They gave me some para+codeine tabs for the pain.

Parents made me eat a souvlaki about 2hrs after the teeth removal lol - it took me about 4hrs to finish that. Wasn't exactly painful. Just very slow.

I really dislike medicine so while not wise, I didn't take the meds. I'd say in about 4 days I was eating/drinking basically anything I wanted - I just made sure to chew softly. Would say another week and I was back to normal.

I really hate taking anything for pain, but it was too much afterwards so I did take the codine, and have done so since. I'm able to talk mostly normally today, so I have that going for me! Made me happy. Little sleep though as I can't get comfortable while laying down. I can't imagine eating anything other than pudding the day of the surgery. Then again, I'm quite paranoid when it comes to recovery.
