On web site says cannot renew license under level 3 and 4 lock down.

Then it basically tells you to stay at home if license has expired. So I can’t get the grocery shopping by car.

It does say if driving for permitted reason on expired  license, police discretion will be used. Not sure how comfortable I am with that wording.

I don’t get why they don’t extend out the expiry date of license.

Here’s web site I got info from:

 https://www.nzta.govt.nz/about-us/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-services-update/frequently-asked-questions/driver-licensing-and-driving/#my-driver-licence-has-or-is-about-to-expire-can-i-still-drive

I'm in the same boat - license expires tomorrow. Got in touch with the AA to see if stores we open for renewal under L3 (South Island) and they just directed me to the NZTA link that OP posted.

I would hope that should you have your license checked in L3/L4 (or even shortly after moving out of them) that the police would be understanding and acknowledge that it is actually impossible to get it renewed

Mines due to expire on Sept 17.   This time I have to get a medical  (75)  which I have got  but lockdown happened the day before I was due to go and get the license  updated. .  Here's hoping that we are back in Level 2 by then..

This item was covered on the news this week. A police spokesman noted that there was no blanket exemption but said that officers would show discretion regarding reasonable use for essential travel.

My one does not expire until October, so hopefully was getting ahead of myself, hopefully L2 or lower by then. Will risk driving to work, and food shopping if not though.

Did some more looking through web site, and looks like can renew license any time like before it expires, don't have to wait for the expiry reminder letter to come, just if it is more then 12 months until expires then new license time period will start when granted, not from expiry date of old.

If I had known that would've got it done earlier.

Also have 5 years from expired date to renew without practical or theory tests, (when normally would not had to).  License can be used for ID for purpose of renewing for up to two years after expiring.

I just got mine renewed yesterday.  Something that normally takes 15 minutes took 75 minutes due to Covid restrictions.

I’ve got mine renewed as well. Had to line up for 1 hour. Two windows, around 10 minutes a person. Person in front of me had expired license but got on fine with renewing it.

Someone said they were going to go to another branch, but got told the wait there would be over 2 hours.

Amazed at the number people that turn up to pay bills in person,  if it was insurance payment or AA membership one, they went in almost straight away.

Also, at the moment, you can renew your car's registration online without having a current warrant of fitness.
