This one is a special case though. If you have a three lane motorway, it's sunny, middle of the day, with relatively low traffic, a muppet driving at 80km/h on the fast lane is nothing more than a muppet.

The speed is not a target but there's no reason for people to do less than the marked speed if there are other lanes available.

I think it should be a target. As you say, someone travelling at 80 in a 100 zone is just as much a nuisance as someone tailing you trying to do 120. If our speedos were accurate we could all do 100, no-one makes silly overtaking mistakes, no-one holds up traffic.... with the development of "Driverless" vehicles this could all be negated in the near future...but where's the fun in that

There is often occasions that traveling at 100km/h is not safe, that is why you can get ticketed doing so.

I am not saying people should ALWAYS drive at 100km/h. I am saying that people driving under the speed even if conditions allow should be good enough drivers to move over to the slow lane and let the others keep going.

This has always been a bit of a silly example. They're driving at "80km/h" because many of the "main" country roads in New Zealand are winding and narrow, and often the people haven't driven those roads before or often, so they drive at a safe speed. They "suddenly speed up" at the passing lanes because passing lanes are usually put in places where it's straighter and wider, therefore it is safer to drive faster.

"Passing lanes" aren't really there to allow pushy, tailgating, speed freaks to zoom past "slow" drivers. Passing lanes are there to allow car drivers to get past slow moving heavy vehicles like trucks, busses, etc.

We don't have the keep left pass right rule here in NZ which is really just another example of how different our road rules are to the rest of the world.

Passing lanes IMO are for faster traffic, if you driving at the speed limit it should not matter. Keep left, and keep to the speed limit. If someone behind you wants to overtake, thats their problem, they should be allowed to do so and the right lane should never be hogged up.

Lots of road rage I have seen in NZ is caused by stupid right lane drivers, punting along at 90km/h holding up the passing lane. These drivers feel that they have the right to not let anybody overtake them.

Driving at 80km/h then speeding up at passing lanes is two things...

1. Meets the definition of a slow inconsiderate driver.
2. Bloody bad manners, if one is driving for 90% of the time at 80km/h it will add squat to the journey if they stay at that speed during a dual road to allow other motorist pass SAFELY.

"Keeping left on a laned road

Most roads in New Zealand have lanes marked on them with a white line or raised studs.

When driving on a laned road, it is important to drive your vehicle within your lane.

Where there are two or more lanes on your side of the centre line:

keep in the left-hand lane as much as you can
don't use the lane closest to the centre line if you will hold up other vehicles.
The lane closest to the centre line should only be used when:

you want to pass another vehicle
you want to turn right
the left-hand lane is full with other traffic or is blocked."

"Passing on the left

You can only pass on the left when:

there are two or more lanes on your side of the centre line and you are able to pass safely by using the left-hand lane
you are directed to by a police officer
the vehicle you are passing:
has stopped, or
is signalling a right turn, or
is turning right.
At all other times, when you are passing, you must pass on the right."

"Passing lanes

When there are passing lanes, drive in the left-hand lane unless you are passing another vehicle.

If you've been driving slower than the speed limit, don't speed up when you reach a passing lane if other vehicles are following – give them the opportunity to pass you safely."

Fair enough... Thanks for pointing this out. I have yet to see this being enforced on our roads.

Drivers who drive in the right hand lane without overtaking should be fined. Instead it just seems to be the norm by the majority of our drivers.

you obviously have never been between Cambridge and Hamilton, straight flat 100km roads and then every now and then a passing lane where every one that was doing 80km suddenly speeds up to 110 and you have to do 120 to get pass them because if you dont the passing lane ends and within seconds they are doing 80 again.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

This is the worst place I've experienced this issue. Don't know why, but it seems to be the worst stretch of road.

Drivers in the left hand lane pull dangerously into the center of both lanes when they see you coming past in the right towards the merge. Or they just pull out into the right lane, and drive extemely slowly. To them they have this mentality that they were "here first". And you have no right to overtake.

This mostly happens in the Kapiti Coast. But I have seen it a number of times elsewhere in NZ too.

It use to be its worst on SH1 between Paraparaumu and Waikanae. There was a two lane stretch just before reaching the merge in waikanae. If you were ever caught in that traffic, dont dare ride in the right hand lane. The drivers in the left don't like it. Thank goodness they have now made it a single lane.
