The price war in Upper Hutt has started, Gaspy is showing Pak n Save fuel and Caltex at 193.9 (35c/l cheaper than this morning)

Have to watch that sometimes. People ignore the fact it says don't include discounts and go and slap the price down to what they got off their shopping spend... :P

Nah it's genuine.

Waitomo open tomorrow  in Upper Hutt and have 91 for 189.9 and 95 for (from memory) 202.9 for 48 hours

Surprising they decided to match for a promotional period. Golly, don't say they are playing on the human way of thinking and trying to score some extra customers!

If that's used as the excuse it sure reinforces that we should see stations hold it down a lot longer than raising at same time as competetors :/

Have been away for 5 weeks.. so got a bit of a shock when filling up at Z tonight in Browns Bay. Think it's the most I've ever paid for 95.

Are electric cars really reducing the demand that much that the petrol companies are jacking the prices to maintain profits?

Good to see a small price war in Mosgiel last night (about 5km from the new NPD in Green Island)

Z when down 1c to 2.279; BP stayed at $2.249 for most of the day and then went down to $2.209, Mobil went up to $2.289
This morning Z went down to $2.209 to match BP while NPD actually went up to $2.159

Will be interesting to see how long this lasts and how far from Green Island the competition will spread

Quite scary when you take the Mrs' car to get gas and it (until recently) was easily filled with $60 of 91 Octane.

Put in $50 and it barely hit half a tank.

My old beast is now taking over $140 to fill...and rising.

Looks like everyone has found out about the new Waitomo in Upper Hutt, there are traffic queues to get into it: https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/motorists-flock-pumps-waitomo-group-opens-first-petrol-station-in-wellington

The good thing is that having some competition means surrounding upper hutt ones have  drop their prices slightly , and that may spread further into the Wellington region.  Otherwise the others are unlikely to get  much business at all for the next 2 days at least. Although you will always have the odd one that needs to operator to pump it for them, even though most fuel stations stopped being 'service stations' years ago. I believe Z still pumps fuel, as well as many of these small country ones, like the one in Featherston.

What gets me is that ALL of this petrol more or less comes from the same sources. Its not rocket science. if some came from Taranaki and some came from Saudi and some came from Mars, you could understand the fluctuations, but it doesn't.

Either its genuine jockeying for sales or its a cartel.

Remember, innocent Air NZ got done cartelling airfreight.

more news from the frontline of the price war in Rotorua, yesterday 187.9, today 178.9.  not sure if anyone is making much but it is great for the consumer

No. There are 13,000 EV's in NZ, out of 4 million cars - or 0.3% of the fleet. I don't think big oil is shaking in their boots just yet.

Except some of those cars will be secondary cars, which may get little use. Cars sitting in car dealers yards, people who have been provided with a company car but still have a private car etc.

Probably better to look at the number of people who have a drivers license as a better starting point. It would be interesting to find out the average distance traveled per EV/ year. Compared to the average distance traveled per ICE/year.

The price difference between 91 and 95/98. Means that you would only likely buy 95/98 if 91 would cause engine damage to your car. If your car can use 91, Using 95/98 instead would have to give you a much larger fuel economy improvement to justify paying the bigger price difference.

All it takes is lower sales of 95/98 as a % of total sales. Same fixed costs of offering it, meaning larger margin charged over 91.

I predict that in 10 years or so, most petrol stations will only sell 91 and diesel. Look at the decline of automotive LPG as an example.

And back up again.

Z boosted it on Monday and noone followed so back down it went. Next day they all backed down or up to 2.26/2.27. and another 2 this afternoon to 2.29

Sigh. So many shifts so little time

Today I drove from Wellington to Napier. The highest price I saw was 2.29 in Wellington and the lowest was at Pak N Save in Masterton which, if I recall correctly, was 1.99.

Total distance travelled would be more relevant.

In the US, you can select from one of 3 or 4 octane ratings. The pump mixes "regular" and "premium" fuel to give the selected octane rating.
