The EU/UK model 3's could be spec'd with towbars, Tesla NZ/Oz has approved the stealth hitch for use.  I dont see it as any issue.

As for the Ford phev, they had to recall all their PHEVs in Europe due to battery box problems, the mache I wouldn't trust at all, personally I dont see ford with any skills in the EV market and I wouldnt personally buy one , though if the escape tech is from toyota hopefully it should be ok.

$3k difference between a full EV like the EV6 or the PHEV is a no brainer imo anyhow.  Range is often overblown, unless you do many long road trips with tight deadlines its easy with an E that has a moderate range

Dingbatt:

It doesn’t have a tow bar (yet).

The NZ Owner’s Manual states:

“WARNING Do not use Model 3 for towing purposes. Model 3 does not currently support towing. Towing can cause damage and increase the risk of a collision.
CAUTION Using Model 3 for towing before Tesla-approved towing components and accessories are available may void the warranty.”
(direct cut and paste)

My Tesla Advisor assured me it could tow up to 910kg (braked) but there are no official Tesla tow hitches.   The UK owner’s manual does allow towing and has a whole section in the “Vehicle Loading” chapter. Strange when the UK model is built in the same Shanghai factory. The NZ manual is a cut and paste job from the US manual (as is the Aussie one).

So I will need something in writing from Tesla NZ before I fit one.

The above is partly why I am still leaning towards replacing our second car with something like the Eclipse Cross PHEV which has an official tow bar and is rated at 750/1500kg.

Disappointing that Tesla still hasn't got around to supplying a towbar to the NZ / AUS market. That said, the model 3's have had tow ratings loaded into the NZTA database by tesla, so I wouldn't have an issue with fitting an aftermarket bar, and towing with one if I had one.

Not sure how attached to your Tesla you are, but in your position (where I didn't want to tow with it), but in your potion where I was considering spending $47k+ on a PHEV (to replace a secondary car in your fleet), I think the option of swapping your model 3 to an EV6 long range, and getting something like a $30k, cira 2017 40kWh leaf as the second car would be worthy of consideration.

I won’t be changing my M3 for an EV6. See the review thread for why.

My commentary was aimed at Ichiu7, who was asking for viewpoints on whether an EV6 for $3K more was a better option than an Escape PHEV. Obviously in my case (for the M3) it was, although if I hadn’t chosen red, there was no price difference at all (after rebates). It is heavily dependant on use case, that is the only reason I mentioned towing. My BIL will eventually get sick of me borrowing his Ranger to tow stuff to the beach! There are other parts to the PHEV decision, towing is a minor component.

I guess if Tesla have approved the hitch, maybe they should amend the owner’s manual. After all, what is going to be referenced in a law court? Can’t see anything on the Tesla NZ website referencing a hitch being approved. More than happy to be proven wrong. But that is getting OT for this thread (sorry Scott3).

Tesla would have to show that the towbar caused the problem thats how our system works

The other issue is my wife likes the higher ride position of a SUV. That is one of her key buying decisions. We will have to check that. As for Ford and EV their Mustang MACH-E is doing gangbusters and their new F150 Lightning https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/f150-lightning/ is supposed to be incredible so I have no worries about their EV capability

$3K is not that big a deal and delivery wise the Ford is not going to be here until September so that aligns with the EV6 availability

From my perspective the EV6 is not really an SUV. It is an oversized hatchback, or at best could be considered a heavy crossover. Same with the Ioniq5. These are a new class of vehicle (imo) and shouldn’t need to be shoehorned into ICE categories. Yes the eye height of the EV6 is slightly higher than a sedan, but didn’t seem as elevated as an SUV/Crossover.

Excellent!

I assume it will be the GT-Line. Most of the demonstrators seem to be. But if you are looking at the base model Air, it pays to know what you’re not getting (hud, blind spot camera, etc). It has a bewildering number of buttons and settings that will make a difference to your driving experience. So I can only suggest doing a bit of research. Don’t get me wrong. It is very much a vehicle you can get in, push the start button and drive, but the salesman I had told me they ‘reset’ the vehicle after each test drive (whatever that means).

Yeah right, apart from the problems they have making them, and the problems the owners have, and the problems ford have updating and fixing them.  If it was made by tesla it would be generating headline news every day.

Browse away...   edit - I've not checked that in a fair few months and it seems the same old issues of paak, cars stopping etc  I'm sure there are some good ones but consider ford only sold about 7000 of them last Q...

Just checked this site out

https://kia.co.nz/vehicles/kia-ev6/range-and-specifications/

The things I would miss are

-Remote Smart Park Assist (RSPA) - Parallel & Perpendicular Parking Function (the Ford has this)

Parking Collision Avoidance Assist (PCA) not sure what that is

-Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM)

- AR (Augmented Reality) Head-up Display - Windscreen Projected (the Ford has this)

If I hadn't known before then I might not have missed these features so I will be asking

Hence why, from my perspective the Earth AWD is the sweet spot. Yes you loose out on the rebate, I get that! I feel its worth it from a technology perspective.

Just checking in after almost 1,000kms on the EV6 Air AWD.

- Wish I could afford the GT-Line

- Wish it had 400hp like the Genesis

- I experienced some bugs, zombie mode (once), heater failure (about 4 times now).  A reboot will fix it, I've booked in to have it looked at next month, not a huge deal.

- Android auto disconnects every now and then, could be the cable.  I do mostly short trips so it doesn't bother me too much, and I love listening to Mike Hosking on ZB anyway :D

That's is all for now.

I will make a call if I can live without these things but a jump to $95K is going to be hard to justify
