I have decided (for the time being at least) that my Model 3 has dropped so much in value, that it is no longer “my precious”. So I have done a few minor modifications to it. All of which are reversible.
Firstly, I bought a “S3XY Knob and Commander from Europe in last year’s Black Friday sales. It consists of a dongle (the Commander) that attaches to OBD port in the driver’s side footwell and controller (Knob) that fits at the back of the centre console storage.
The knob is programmable and provides access to functions without having to dive into the screen menus. The biggest downside is that some of functions are not synched the screen display. There are literally dozens of things that can be programmed into the knob.
The most useful feature, and one I use almost every time I drive, is one that re-engages the lane keeping when you change lanes.
It has also allowed me to have a driver’s display in front of me using a repurposed Samsung S8.
It connects via Bluetooth with the Commander and provides a readout as shown. Its most valuable function is it provides blindspot monitoring where the correct edge of the screen lights up amber if there is a car in your blindspot (on that side). This happens even without the indicator activated and it lights up red if you do put your indicator on with a vehicle in your blindspot. It’s obvious the info is available on the canbus so I don’t know why Tesla haven’t seen fit to display full time BSM.
You'll note, I still have my hud fitted.
And the final mod is…
I have never really liked the tail lights on my car (I do like the highland ones). They are so obviously designed for the North American market and have tiny amber indicators jammed in as an afterthought. So now I have something that (imo) looks better, particularly at night.
