I have decided (for the time being at least) that my Model 3 has dropped so much in value, that it is no longer “my precious”. So I have done a few minor modifications to it. All of which are reversible.

Firstly, I bought a “S3XY Knob and Commander from Europe in last year’s Black Friday sales. It consists of a dongle (the Commander) that attaches to OBD port in the driver’s side footwell and controller (Knob) that fits at the back of the centre console storage.

The knob is programmable and provides access to functions without having to dive into the screen menus. The biggest downside is that some of functions are not synched the screen display. There are literally dozens of things that can be programmed into the knob.

The most useful feature, and one I use almost every time I drive, is one that re-engages the lane keeping when you change lanes.
It has also allowed me to have a driver’s display in front of me using a repurposed Samsung S8.

It connects via Bluetooth with the Commander and provides a readout as shown. Its most valuable function is it provides blindspot monitoring where the correct edge of the screen lights up amber if there is a car in your blindspot (on that side). This happens even without the indicator activated and it lights up red if you do put your indicator on with a vehicle in your blindspot. It’s obvious the info is available on the canbus so I don’t know why Tesla haven’t seen fit to display full time BSM.

You'll note, I still have my hud fitted.

And the final mod is…

I have never really liked the tail lights on my car (I do like the highland ones). They are so obviously designed for the North American market and have tiny amber indicators jammed in as an afterthought. So now I have something that (imo) looks better, particularly at night.

Yep Tesla have their own navigation. From memory, it works fine without paying for premium data connection.

Though paying for that ($10 per month) gives you live traffic updates/speed cameras and of course TuneIn and other streaming service access - great for playing your favourite radio stations via data streaming all over the country.

The Tesla navigation is very good - just put your destination in and it works out the best route - you can make changes and it factors in where you will need to charge along the way and how much charge you will have at destination. You wont need Google maps.

Good news! With the recent holiday update, traffic indication on the map is now free for everyone. As for using the streaming apps in the car, Premium Connectivity is still useful for that, but if you have a decent data plan on your cellphone you can use your phones hotspot instead and use them through that.

Can't for the life of me work out why they don't have the blindspot indicators on the screen all the time.

Obviously having an LED on the external mirror would be best (I see the M3 has that now) and the aftermarket.

Either red bar down either side of the screen or maybe a seperate little indicator.

Better to know before using the indicators I reckon.

Also cant figure why they made the power usage/regen display about 2 pixels wide and almost invisible - I could live without it altogether to be honest - but if its going to be there it was much better when it was along the top of the right panel above the speed readout.

My non Tesla gives me an audible warning if there's something in the blindspot when I indicate. This has resulted in me indicating far more often. Only indicating when you think there's another driver to see it is a bad habit.

Sorry - Don't understand what you mean.

I don't want to turn on my indicator if there is someone in my blind spot if I can avoid it.

Having seen people indiacte and just start moving at me when they haven't seen me has never been a pleasant experience.

I am not going to randomly sample the indicators to see if there is possibly someone there - I do try and plan ahead - as all drivers should.

I (try) and watch to see if it is safe to move left or right. THEN I will indicate (you are supposed to give 3s notice). THEN move.

I was taught to indicate and then check that it was safe to move - so having the alert come on if I indicate and someone is there makes perfect sense.

Sorry - I will blame a defensive driving course as a teenager.

They always taught that you should be aware of what is going on around you as much as possible....

Seems they still suggest you try and check before deciding planning your move:

If you check the screen, it will show you the other vehicles around - that is the blindspot indicator in the pre-2024 Model 3. A quick glance at the screen is part of my routine, inbetween checking the mirrors

I am currently running without subscription and the only thing you dont get now is the sat map view.

But getting the car onto a hotspot wifi and keeping it on it are a right pia esp when the audio apps tend to just stop if you are out of the car, part of this is down to my droid phone just shutting its hotspot down if nothing is using it for a period ( no config I can see) and though still keeping the hotbar icon up but changing the notification text.

Ends up being a performance i dont bother with for short drives. And I dont understand the 'keep car on wifi' setting if you have to enable it every friken time??

That sounds like a phone issue more than a car issue? Does the phone randomise the SSID?

iPhones also turn off the hotspot if nothing has been connected for a while, but in the past I've used some automation (Siri Shortcut) that enables the hotspot when the cars bluetooth connects to the phone so then the car sees the wifi network and joins. I currently have Premium Connectivity at the moment though.

Help!

I carried passengers in the back of my Model 3 yesterday and now there are milky stains on the black vinyl upholstery

Its a combo of both tbh, it doesnt randomize the SSID, but the car needs manually setting to stay on wifi before putting it into drive etc.

I tried faking my home SSID on my hotspot and that doesnt work really either because I need to to happen at home usually

None of it is impossible to get working but its all just incredibly inconvenient vs subscribing to prem data.

Is the remain connected when in drive not working for the SSID of your hotspot? It works perfectly for mine when I want to stream hifi tidal. If I have the hotspot on when I walk back to the car still it will connect and be on it before I am even ready to drive most times. The only issue is if I get in and go into drive before its found the wifi but I have to be super fast to do that and with pin to drive I have never had that happen as the pin entry slows me down so it has plenty of time to connect.

Now that the indicator stalk is retained in the Juniper Model Y, is it going to be included in the Model 3 again?

Likewise, a camera in the front bumper? It was in the initial Highland renders, but never made it into the final production version.

I would think both may appear. Simplifying inventory, as well as software development.
