MikeB4: Jeez people can you shelve the aggressive ageist and other generalisations mixed with obvious envy it’s frankly sickening.

Shame the Mods are asleep at the wheel (excuse the pun)

Seriously? The post was reported. There is no one "sleeping". The mods are doing their work. I am in a fucking hospital bed and have to tell people to pull their heads in?

@Journeyman:

He sounds like a boomer. They had no real driving standards when they got their licence. Now they think they own the roads.

Hey, he wasn't driving a 4WD was he? 😉

Can we stop using terms like this to describe people?

Sure. Is 'old people' ok? I'm not trying to be funny, I'm just trying to work out where the line is drawn.

I can assure you that while I fit into the boomer category, the driving test I was required to pass in order to obtain my driving licence contained comprehensive written and oral questions and the practical driving test was conducted by a uniformed specialist traffic officer, who frankly I found somewhat intimidating at the time, although I passed.

So yep you might want to rethink that statement...

Cool! If you feel my generalisation doesn't apply to you, then don't waste your time being upset by it.

Simply pointing out to you that your assertion that there were no real driving standards in place for the baby boomer generation getting their driving licence was incorrect.

Heading out of Palmy towards Ashurst is Napier Road that's had changes to the speed limits for quite some time now due to many accidents at intersections along that road and out of town.  The speed change from 50km/h up is much further out of town now and includes a long stretch at 80km/h.  Prior to this section of road, Main Street in town is two lanes in each direction which merges to one at a point that's still within the city and speed limits.  The speed change to 100 further out coincides with a passing lane.

All the above results in racing to get to ahead of other cars before the merge and tailgating around both the areas that are still 50kph or not yet 100km/h in possible anticipation of the increase in speed that doesn't exist for quite some distance.  On both directions there are speed indicators showing your speed, one of which is just up from the change down in speed heading in to town.  Both directions have the same issues

Images below show how over the years it's gone from 100, to 80 and now at 50 at a spot just as you leave town after a slight downhill.

Oh the IRONY!

Visiting the Consulate!

Drove Up the Cycleway, before parking in Arthur Street!

Does a hybridbikes.co.nz fully logo'd stationwagon with a plate HYBIKE count for acceptable use of a Cycleway? They sell them afterall!

All this talk about low driving standards reminds me of tales told about Indian drivers and traffic.

Sure enough there's YT vids - drivers in charge of multi-ton inter city buses driving like Schumacher in his heyday,

I've been on several Indian buses and whilst mad there is often a system. The tooting horn gives the vehicle being overtaken plenty of warning and the bus driver sometimes has a spotter at the back letting him know as soon as he can swerve back into the correct lane. We did hire a taxi for a mountain trip at night rather than the bus. I think many of their accidents are drivers falling asleep rather than crazy driving. Like NZ really.

Edit from YT comments that was Bangladeshi bus.

I am expecting either lights or roundabouts to be put on Napier Rd at the end of Keith Street , Roberts Line and James line to make it the preferred route for people in Kelvin Grove etc area to be able to get into town, and the 50k zone to get extended further out.

Or maybe don't make unqualified, unquantified generalisations in the first place.  Stereotyping of many types goes on far too much these days for my liking, particularly when it comes to traffic gripes.

There are car drivers who behave like dicks, most are fine.
There are cyclists who behave like dicks, most are fine.
There are escooterers who behave like dicks, most are fine.
There are motorcyclists who behave like dicks, most are fine.
There are pedestrians who behave like dicks, most are fine.
There are NZ born people who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are immigrants who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are old people who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are young people who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are middle-aged people who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are women who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are men who drive like dicks, most are fine.
There are non-binary people who drive like dicks, most are fine.
My message to everyone is: Some people in traffic are dicks...try not to be one of them.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Or the Muppet I saw about to leave his SUV on the Hydrant while he picked up his precious student from Middleton Grange School!

Left it ON the Fire Hydrant - pointed out he was parked on it!

He actually argued - "so what! I won't be long!" Told me to Get F'd, gave the finger etc! I went inside after photo'ing him.

He stalked to the driveway, took photos of here, moved his vehicle!

So much for teaching Christian Values at MGS! The parents (Some) will undo anything they learn!

Don't think there are many references to parking on fire hydrants in most religions...

Yep with the urban expansion out that way, those are no longer country roads, just extensions of the town roads to access the new subdivisions.
Similarly there are huge sections Picton to Nelson that are 80 or 90km/hr for ages out into the country.  That road took much much longer than I was expected recently en route to Abel Tasman.

I wonder if one day the Summerhill to Ashurst road (passes entrance to Pahiatua Track) will become the preferred connection to the new Te Ahu a Turanga – Manawatū Tararua Highway road from Palmerston North?
