Queen Charlotte drive?  It's campervan infested.  It is shorter by distance, but not by time.

and I remember trying to be clever and take a shortcut between picton and Nelson ... 100k road ... I couldn't even do 50kph in MORE than half the road.

Ahh made that mistake before. Google Maps recommended it to me when it was in an early alpha.

Anyone else would have the car impounded on the spot. But no... He gets nine months disqualification, 120 hours community work. And keeps his Audi.

That, despite "being convicted for driving at dangerous speed in 1982; driving in a dangerous manner in 1980; driving in a dangerous manner and failing to stop for police in 1989; and in 2008 driving recklessly and failing to stop for police. He also alluded to a "smattering" of other convictions both in New Zealand and overseas."

But his defence lawyer says "[the driver] was the managing director of a sizeable and reputable company which saw him travel extensively in New Zealand and overseas." as if this was a good reason for doing 177km/h on the road.

It says that he was brought up a Christian and in business it has meant that people trust him more. The most important lesson Christianity ever taught him is that honesty is the best policy: "When we have made a mistake, we are best to accept, repent and move on."

Not quite consistent with the stories being told in court, in my opinion.

Priceless really, especially when he's the fellow who was screaming blue murder demanding in a Trump-like manner that Heather du Plessis-Allan be "thrown in jail" when she possibly tarnished his impeccable reputation using some dubious "sting" tactics to expose a flaw in gun control laws.  The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Perhaps some "shootin' for jesus" types got to him when he was serving time in the USA.

Early on google also sent people travelling from Nelson to Hanmer through Rainbow Station.  That is the shortest route but it's not a public road and not always passable in 2WD.
