Wondering if others are seeing this in there area - Z leads a price change, no one else follows and they then drop the price back to what it was ..

On Sunday I was out, needed petrol and drove past a Z station - noticed the price was up by 3c compared to earlier in the day. Used Gaspy, and found out NPD was 16c cheaper than Z - so as I was heading that direction anyway filled up. On Monday morning Z still had the most expensive price but by the evening had gone back to what they were earlier on Sunday

Yes, I see that too, although not necessarily Z. In Bulls there's a Mobil & BP opposite each other. It's not uncommon to see one raise their price by 3 or 4 cents, then drop back if the other doesn't.

I also saw Z in Sanson go up by I think 14 cents to 2.23, and then the next day drop back to 2.13.

its becoming quite clear that "Z" is being pushed as a full service "premium brand" ( as opposed to Caltex and Challenge, which they also own)

So I would not be surprised to see Z leading the way when prices rise...

Was in the Gold Coast for the past two weeks. When we arrived it was 1.26 for 91 oct  then over nite it went up to about $1.60.  On my way back to the airport it was sinking down again and was $1.46 .  There is one gas outlet there who has a happy hour once a week selling at 99c a liter.   Ques all around the block.

It's good to see the Allied in Seaview (Lower Hutt) is finally being competitive, they used to match everyone else but now currently 201.9 (6c/l cheaper than Waitomo and Caltex Old Hutt Road)

That's the norm in Queensland (and I think others). And you have to time it right to make use of it.

It appears they make use of hedging and budgeting more than ours and treat it as a spot price. Where you can spike the price, and fill the bulks. And when its cheap you're still making on it over the entire period. (It may even help balance out the buffer we don't see here - 3 months bulk reserve required, floating raw product prices, outlets filled at different time but the price spikes or drops at the same time across all brands)

They weren't always the leader in canterbury (mobil and BP usually). But are now.

Likewise, since the heavy news presence getting out about the 'national' price and price variances likely to be propping other centres up the pricing has varied greatly here

After being early 20s after another 'maybe we should look into it' period. They all spiked with heavy discounting (noted here earlier) . Dropped just before Jul 1 - then proceeded to take the govt 4c on the chin for 2? weeks before sneaking it up again

Now across the city there are the usual unmanned 8-10c off. Zs near them often matching with FB/AP of same value

Belfast through papanui ranges from 2.12 to 2.25(common target) with the majority in the middle at 2.22 which is lower than elsewhere in city.

We just got a McKeowns out here with only 2 major players present. So the local mobil has dropped to 2.12 while caltex sits at 2.14 to compete.

Z has been the premium brand for some time. The strategy of building Caltex was to have two brands with Caltex driving market share competing on price and Z simply driving profits because price was not their main selling point.

How timely and co-incidental that Z, Caltex, BP (and I think Mobil after doing it Wed) all offer 10c off for loyalties on the same day promoted on the radio on my drive in this AM...

Must be a local thing... no 10c off on BP or Caltex here. :(

For those that maybe Johnsonville or nearby.

The Challenge Station that was on the corner of Bassett Rd & Ohariu Rd is going to become a Waitomo

A Waitomo banner went up into the fences around the site sometime yesterday afternoon.

Good to see 91 at under $2.00 - $1.99.7 at Gull stations around Auckland North Shore today. Our nearest Gull is 2km away and on the way there I drove past Mobil and Z stations at $2.16.

This is a lot better than the near $2.30 we saw not long ago. The price of crude has dropped well below USD60 but the NZD has fallen in the last few days as a result of the Trump/China trade shenanigans - which will put upward pressure on fuel prices.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

All staff at the company I work at get a Z fuel card for personal use which gives a discount on 91 of around 30cpl every day. They must be absolutely creaming it on the average customer.

Been meaning to have another gripe. But the public beat me to it last week - Z went up 4c before a 10c off day, and lowered it a day after. 'Co-incidental' of course - and along with the usual 'discount days are planned in advance' (funny, been every wednesday for the last few weeks) responses on social media complaints, they now add 'prices can fluctuate daily'

It made the online news but didn't have the usual AA 'this isn't justified' backing.

I've actually suggested Gaspy add a 7-day history graph to each station. There is enough people checking them now that errors should be low, but it will soon corner stations that get the morning memo or raise it on Thusday and back down Sunday

CHC, now ranges from 209 - 2.29 across the greater city. (Rangiora NPD forced them all down to 1.89 last week!) No 2 station appears to match the other anymore. Where previously it was basically the same across the board. You just needed to zip into a station that hadn't followed suit yet. Now you actually have to shop about (if you are out and about already that is)

Gone are the days of the 'national' average I suspect (found out with a leaked email late last year? and subsequent 'inquiries'), and are likely now averaging across the city. What does it become between those 2 markers? around 2.19. The same it was just before those findings were released (and the 4c or so rise for the tax added) and close to the 2.22(5) most are at.

I did chuckle at the latest news about the Saudi impact. Seems the NZ sourced supplies is about 4.7% total from S.A. But we're still likely to be landed with a 7c increase. (12-13% global market increase)

They snuck some more info about their findings in the same release

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12268120

To which we have seen some of their suggestions play out already

Z's submission recommended that petrol stations all move to "fully display" all prices, including premium and post-discounts, on price boards.

Z are now pushing for the price of all fuels to be on signs. This is a complete about face from a few weeks ago where they said there was no need nor point for this.

I discussed this with them via public tweets and DMs about the rollout of their new signs which show the Pumped discount - it's stupid to be spending $$ upgrading their signs to be showing the price saving the 6c all while ignoring the price of 95.

I've driven off from 3 Z stations in recent weeks while driving between Wellington and Palmy because the price on Gaspy hadn't been correct and I wasn't willing to pay the inflated price they were charging. I just don't see the point in visiting Z now.
