Interesting. I have a current Yaris and the dashboard's where it 'should' be. Maybe Toyota realised that it's a bad idea and moved it back (I believe the Yaris was redesigned in 2020).

Theres a tricky few years where a lot of car companies have to make and sell fossil cars yet have better cheaper to run cleaner EVs on the lot that are as cheap to buy.

I dont think they've figured out how to get past that bit...

Eva888: So what's the point of a gov rebate if the prices are raised by an equal amount by the dealers? Does the rebate apply if you buy privately?

It's a problem seen more with used car rather than new cars. Many new cars that are eligible for the rebates have seen their prices dropped

What would be the best advice as to timing to sell the VW and buy a hybrid? It will be a second car and ideally would like to trade in, but the last dealer that appraised for a direct buy shocked me with the low price offered. Am possibly looking at a Prius rather than an Aqua for more room and power for a longer trip.

TBH I don’t like trying to sell privately as I was inundated with a lot of unsavoury pushy types last time we sold a car and the person we sold it to very cheaply, tried to knock half the price off again after the sale and while he had ownership. It was such an unnerving experience so I may be stuck with using a dealer.

Dealers will give you book price for tradeins usually, and usually shift them on to another dealer where they are better suited (quite often the buyer of tradeins is a wholesale trade in dealer who has a network of dealers to shift cars too, its not always the garage your dealing with).

Used cars in general are doing ok for value so selling private will be by far the better option, otherwise look at the turners car buying thing etc

cruxis: Clean Car Discounts for new regos expands to low emission light vehicals on April 1st 2022. So expect a price rise for used  and new imports then too,  As the Japanese Sellers have put prices up on NZ used car importers already because of it. So I am told by the car dealers.

This does not ring true for me. I believe the vast majority of used imported vehicles are purchased at auction in Japan.

Details here:

https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/clean-car-programme/clean-car-discount/clean-car-discount-eligibility-criteria/eligibility-criteria-for-vehicles-first-registered-between-1-july-2021-and-31-march-2022/

Mostly for newly registered vehicles.  Don't have to be new, but new to NZ.

The rebate applies if its under 145g co2, under $80k and has a 3 star safety rating, on first registering in NZ.

Just had a very quick look on Trademe tonight (is there any other place you could suggest for car purchases?) and the price of hybrids seems to have jumped markedly recently. Possibly related to the events in Ukraine, etc - but I couldn't see anything nearly decent for less than $12,500.
Edit: just looked at the interiors of some Aquas and Prius's; how do you current owners find it with the dashboard etc not being in front of you (like most other cars) but in the middle? I find that a little off-putting, having driven in my stepbrother's Yaris years ago.

I also looked at Toyota's NZ page, they seem to have a fair few listed (although I bet they're quite expensive), including a plug in hybrid, although I can't figure out is that electric, hybrid, or both?

https://www.toyota.co.nz/our-range/the-toyota-difference/hybrid/

We looked at a hybrid Corolla the other week and were told that if  we put down the $2000 holding deposit it would take 6 to 8 months for the car to arrive.  We gave it a miss.

My parents ordered a Yaris hybrid in June and didn't get it until February. I imagine waiting lists might be even worse now.

It sounds like they are indeed getting worse. Mine was six months (ordered in March, received in September). You can't even order that particular model at the moment!

There were issues with the mini and its dash layout in some countries which is why there are multiple layouts of it. I expect the same happened here and with how many imports we have it could be anything from anywhere.

Those waiting times must be a nightmare for anyone who has written their car off and desperately needs a new one!
