It's not so much a matter of who wants (up until their house is on fire at least, then you want it as close as possible to save the poor pump op time as they run the feeder...) but they should not be more than 150m apart. Most appliances are set up with enough feeder hose to cover just over half that distance, so no matter where you park, you'll be able to reach the hydrant. Start messing with that distance, and you might find the crew run out of water before your house is out.

Remember too that they are also tapped straight off the town water supply, so often the location across the road / footpath / driveway is often dictated by the mains location. Corners / tees etc to move it are a pain, and also collect sediment which if not flushed reasonably regularly can cause the hydrant to leak, giving people something else to complain about.

The above is slightly simplified, but hopefully gives people an idea of why you find the little yellow lids where you do.

These are also good for those "end of the world" disaster scenarios. Depending on the type, either access to water or waste disposal.

I believe the latter, based on what came up out of it during the floods. 💩

Lol, is the engine still running?

More annoying is that flippin scooter smack bang in the middle of the footpath. Those things are such a hazard.

I throw them into the bushes or grass verge if I encounter them blocking the footpath. They are very heavy, so an elderly or disabled person would not be able to move one.

Just witnessed a high speed "follow through" at the Stop Sign narrowly missing oncoming traffic at the T intersection!

Sheesh he was moving! School parent running late for dinner? (It goes to MGS regularly - I recognised the vehicle!)

Sorry you had this happen. It's never a good time for this.

All good? No one hurt? The other drive's got insurance?

Thanks freitasm. Everyone was all good and no one was hurt. The other driver said that they had insurance but I also took a photo of their drivers license.

I've done an online police report and insurance claim already but it took about 2 hours this morning. Had to convert photos to .jpg instead of what iOS uses and then the dashcam video was too big. Had to find a converter to resize that. Uploading files into OneDrive etc. I made me think about what would happen if my in-laws (who are in their 70's) had to go through the same process.
