Having not cared what the price of petrol is for over 3 years, I've doubled down and ordered a Tesla Model 3.

I didn't think it was possible to care less about the price of petrol......but I was wrong.

There are many really good EVs coming through in the next 12 months from VW, MG, SEAT, Nissan, Hyundai, KIA.....the opportunity is certainly going to be there for many people to free themselves from the Americans and Saudis manipulating the price of oil for their own enrichment.

I wouldn't surprise me at all if the Saudis blew up their own installations (or release smoke bombs to make it look like it).... The profit on the 18% price rise would dwarf the cost of any repairs.

This stuff happens. As the media has said gas might go up 10c, it will, and if its 25c, its "cos of the war"  Its great to have a business where you can hop on the bandwagon to excuse yourself of unfortunate price rises

Everybody's already knows about the recent Yemen's Houthi rebels (or Iran) attack on Saudi-backed oil refineries.

What's annoying is what I know what comes next.

Even before the fuel companies purchase petrol at higher prices, and they're using their cheaper reserves, they'll raise the prices at the pump.

Naturally when the opposite happens, overseas petrol prices reduce, they'll keep the price elevated.

Besides a lot of talk of a "broken market", I don't expect Commerce Commission, Energy Minister Megan Wood or PM Jacinda Ardern to actually do anything.

Perhaps instead of waiting for the proposed EV "freebate" to kick in end of 2021, perhaps I'll look into the already subsidized UK and Japan EV's

The Nissan Note e-Power Hybrid sounded promising until I realized there's no plug-in charging.

I agree. Its a tough tough ask to fix this abuse, and IMHPO, Labour is now gunshy to take on an issue that they may not succeed in

I looked at the Note, its very very cool,. Its a Tardus car, but it runs on an EV battery that is charged by a small ICE, so its not an EV, its a carbon using EV. Or you can rightly call it an ICE. But there is a need to super low usage FF cars in the transition. That car use less fuel than by 656cc motorbike that weighs only 219kg wet

What is a Tardus car?

I assume you're not using Latin for "slow", or referring to the TARDIS, "Time And Relative Dimension In Space".

Its a term used by some for small cars with big interiors. The Note is small, but roomy inside. I was looking for a cheap runabout just for golf, and the Note is small but roomy inside. I went for a 2010 Honda Fit, also roomy in front, back seats and when I fold down the rear seats for clubs, its BIG! But its a tiny car to look at

Looks like Z has reacted, according to Gaspy 2 of their Wellington CBD stations are now 244.9 (up around 10c/l).

Worth noting that Waitomo's new Johnsonville station has just opened at 208.9 currently

Wow, the media estimated 10c per litre and it was exactly that. Awesome reporting...

Its a pity that a war has increased the price in the last couple of day, but sea transport has come a long way to get the new and improved fuel here so fast

The media also predicts $3/L

Someone come up with a ~60c figure to close in on $3. Which Z struck down and said more like 6-7. But other 'analysts' also agreed that it should take a couple of days. With bulk stocks to buffer, the production halt may only last 2-3 days (it is Saudi Arabia..) and the US was ready to release held stocks to make up for any potential shortfall in global impact.

The pricing did sway up a bit for barrel of raw product, But fairly sure most would sit on their hands and wait for a good special again like most of us tend to.

Doesn't help that the radio (at least one I listen to) is still hammering the 'fill up now before its too late' each news break which will drive consumption and the need to replenish said bulk.

This is a double edge sword for me,

I own a EV so an increase in petrol prices makes me feel better as my ROI goes up, the pay back shortens and I feel like I made a good decision. :)

On the other hand everything i consume has a component of oil in it, either in it or to transport it to me. :(

I agree with others that petrol prices will naturally now "just go up" and they can blame the bombing for that - even though the petrol is already in the country/the petrol stations and so should not be increased.

Since NPD arrived in Dunedin, petrol prices have been all over the show; like the person from Christchurch mentioned, the national price that we used to follow (with a handful of exceptions) now seems to be a thing of the past; I drive past a Z and BP everyday, Z has often increased prices in the morning and then decreased them again at night - it is almost like we are now following Australia's model for pricing.
