Obraik:

I see the higher spec versions come with "Remote Park" (a copy of the Summon feature that Tesla has) which might help?

I hadn't thought of that as the dealer showed it to me :-)

But it's not the backing out - it is the turning around.

My house is down a narrow driveway about 2.8m wide so the car fits okay. Then the driveway exits in a concrete pad in front of the house and garage. The car has to be backed out from the garage into this pad (back and left) and straightened up to go up the driveway. Strangely that is quite easy with my 540i which is the same length as the EV6 and 1751mm wide versus 1850mm of the EV6 so not that much difference but then I was driving a demo car and so ultra cautious. And since it was the GT-Line it had all the cameras including 360 view but still was not that easy.

Just because there is a feature to do something does not mean it will do it properly every time every scenario.

Knew someone who used the park assist and the car destroyed his wheels on the kerb. And even Teslas crash on auto-whatever.

On the other hand at your house you can optimize the environment for best system performance.

Because most of us don’t have an endless money supply there are inevitably compromises you have to make. You have to weigh up what you see as the positives in the EV6 vs the negatives. If you are at the point where you dread getting the car in and out of your home but go ahead anyway will that remove the enjoyment of driving it?

And will that colour what house you choose next?

It might be a bit like someone not buying a car they like because it doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. They are letting ownership of a $2000 phone sway the purchase of a $70000 car? Likewise a $70000 car swaying a $1.2M house?

The flip side of course is that while supply of EVs is constrained there is a good chance you will be able to sell it without too big a loss if you discover you have made a horrendous mistake. Certainly that helped sway my decision to try fitting an EV into my lifestyle (not the other way around). In 3 years time I’m picking there will be increasing numbers of EVs that were bought in the flush of the rebate scheme will come on the market as people look to update. At that stage I expect they will show pretty marked depreciation.

Out of interest, did you do the same home parking trial with the Escape PHEV you were keen on?

Good point. Given these cars are over $60K they are not flying off the shelves so to speak. And all dealers always ask me if I plan a trade-in or finance and my answer is no. I would just write a cheque (metaphorically speaking).  If I hate it, and hate is not really what is going to happen, then it should be reasonably easy to sell.

But my wife doesn't like the look and now I have shown her the Niro EV, she is keen on that. The tech isn't quite as good as the since it comes in 3 flavours ICE, Hybrid and BEV so it's on a 400V platform rather than 800V but in the long run I don't that matters.

No I didn't take the Escape home but the Escape is 2178mm wide, the EV6 is 1880mm so it's much wider.  So that would have been a challenge.

But the Ford has received a good long-term review which plauds its battery range

It's probably academic now maybe now since we are not going to buy the car anyway.

Kerb to kerb is commonly quoted. (rather than wall to wall, i.e. the diameter of the front outside wheel, rather than the front of the bumper.

Out of interest has anybody in this thread either bought one or put down a deposit for one and which model?

I was going to go for the entry level model and miss out on

- HUD - no problem

- heated and ventilated seats (again not a big deal in NZ weather)

- other automation which is not a big deal either

So about $64500 after clean air discount.

Trouble is it takes two to make a buying decision of this level and only one party agreed :-(

I would have thought the biggest thing you’d have been missing out by going with the entry level model was battery capacity/range - for only $6k more, assuming the WLTP ratings are proportional, the LR Air’s range is 32% greater than the SR. (Personally, I’d also like the additional power and speed that comes with the LR, but that’s not as fundamental.)

I think it’s great that, unlike Hyundai (and now Polestar, I think?), Kia have managed to release a long-range version under the $80k rebate; if the boot was a better size, I’d have definitely looked seriously at the LR Air, as I’m not comfortable settling for a car we’d used for travel with a relatively low real-world range. While it does miss out on many of the things I like about the Tesla MY, I think I could cope without those.

Either way, a pity you couldn’t convince the other party!

Range was not a big deal for me. If I could get to Taupo on one charge then hopefully I could charge enough there to then get to Auckland, with maybe a break for afternoon tea in Hamilton. Plus the Air LR doesn't give you anymore features apart from the longer range.

My wife's view of the styling surprised me. I think it looks great but she felt it's a car for "boys" with its severely raked back etc.  It is unconventional looking to say the least.
