So maybe you could take your car to a cheaper dealership for servicing?

Aren’t there a very limited number of BYD dealers? And, for warranty purposes, wouldn’t you be required to use an authorised mechanic (likely to be those very dealerships)?

But, more importantly, are you liking the new car? Or are you like me, taking some time to get used to the differences?

There's one in Tauranga which is a bit far from Wellington

I've only driven the car home and that's all. My wife is the primary driver and so I think we're going to spend some time this weekend going over all the features so she's comfortable driving it

One thing I am going to have to work out is how to turn off all the incessant beeps that occur. They appear to be if you exceed the posted speed limit, it detects cars too close on your left and a whole bunch of other things that are really quite annoying

. Though they say Apple Carplay and Android auto are coming soon, it would be really great if they implemented a map application. Every other EV I've driven has a native map application which you can leave the as the default display on the screen.

Without that I don't really know what a useful default display might be.

I wonder how much of what he says is actual and more important, relevant here?

Nothing you don't know already I guess, but I'm a fan of the magazine, so -

Reports on that strange warranty, with quite short exclusions for things like wheel bearings, display screens and charging port concern me far more than a regular service schedule.
Has anyone found what the NZ warranty states. Does it differ from the AU one?

I'd imagine the CGA would cover those items

Providing the dollar value is not too high the small claims court is great.
They should raise the dollar limit though for inflation, its many years since it was set.

However all the stress of doing the homework to put your case.
After all the stress of arguing with dealer you still have to deal with.

Some dealers are great, I have seen stories of dealers advocating for customers.
Reverse can be true though...
I know of one Holden dealer who was going to stick a customer with a huge bill for new ECU.
Fortunately the customer got onto the right person at Holden when checking price was really true.
They noted, by the way, we do have a recall on that ECU you should not be paying a cent.

Having more than a passing experience in marketing, I don't understand this at all.

You are entering market to build a brand position, that pays long term benefits.
Then you nickel and dime, nitpick.

There is a separate tribunal for vehicles when it comes to the CGA and has a $100k limit

Very good point. Hadn't thought about CGA.

It would seem hard to believe that BYD would nickel and dime the owners on these items. They would likely lose in any tribunal and the press would be terrible.

Googling around there are other brands with wheel bearing exclusion. Wheel bearing life is related to road surface & user tyre/rim choice. I expect it's nothing more than that.

Wheel bearing exclusion? That's not something that's usual. I wonder why it's even a consideration. They're usually something that lasts a couple of 100,000 k's or more in my experience.

sounds like that's (one of the places) they're skimping on designing/using cheaper material to get the lower price point perhaps

Just to clarify - the New Zealand warranty is NOT the same as Australia. It's 6 years bumper-to-bumper with no strange exclusions (and 8 years on battery and motor)
