Tonight, twilight, State Highway 2 (100 km/h). I became aware of a car behind me. I say "became aware of" because it didn't have its lights on. It proceeded to overtake both me and the car in front, in one move, without indicating, on a bend.

my wife does it but only because she has a really bad back and her feet up relieves some pain

Saves on chiropracter fees when you end up with your knees embedded in your skull I guess.

Not quite as grizzly, but a lesson learned none the less:

A few years ago I was working in Aussie, a young lass thought it a good idea to ride with her feet on the dash in a medium sized truck off road. A decent bump later, and she kicked the windscreen hard enough to knock the bottom corner out of the rubber seal, and smash the screen.

While we did have a spare available, it was decided to leave the repair until after the job was done, and instead give her and the driver a pair of goggles each, as well as move them to the rear of the convoy whenever we moved. A couple of weeks later, they were most definitely sorry for what they had done!

Idiot. I wouldn't want to pick up the pieces when it all goes wrong.

I've seen it once or twice. It looks completely nuts to me. Tyres are small. Any debris could knock you off. Practical stopping power has to be minimal.

My scooter could probably stop faster than my motorcycle, twin disk brakes and much less mass. It could also keep up with the traffic and I'm pretty sure it could out accelerate most cars.

BUT - I just wouldn't ride on the motorway, even if it wasn't illegal to do so. It definitely is illegal to ride on on the motorway though.

At least that guy was wearing some safety gear, but even so there is a danger of being run over by a car (or multiple cars) if he had a crash. There is no guarantee that the gear would prevent serious injury or death in a situation like that. Surely it would be more sensible to ride that scooter on 50kph roads, rather than the motorway?

Really? I hope there was a touch of sarcasm there. All I see is a set of jeans, cloth jacket, backpack and cloth cap on backwards!

I have done plenty of cycling (not scootering) through traffic, but speeds there were clocking up to 50 kph - just plain dumb. No way he could avoid a vehicle suddenly changing lane, no matter how good his brakes are. I just feel for the poor bloke that one day collides with gits like this.

Well, he is wearing more than t-shirt, shorts & jandals - that is something.

I tend to wear a LOT more protection than that, even though I'm not riding on the motorway. I like to wear a helmet that protects my head & face, knee/shin protection, hand/wrist protection, elbow protection, decent shoes or boots, etc.

Remember: you only need to wear a helmet if there is anything inside your head that is worth protecting!
