Good overview/review of the NZ Y

What I like about model y is much bigger boot for family trips but bit concerned he said his testing was 260km range.

My range line in the sand is ability to drive from Dunedin to Wanaka with enough range on arrival I can nip out for milk before charging over night. (275km)

I think you'd have to go some to get it that low

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KP8x2pEcbo

With the standard range ~60kWh battery
Range at 150 Wh/km = 400km
Range at 175 Wh/km = 350km
Range at 200 Wh/km = 300km

I expect around 175wh/km for usual NZ driving

Surely your not suggesting motoring journalists are "hoons" but he did mention that figure!!

("I'm not a hoon I drive performance cars, hoons drive clapped out turbo with noisy exhausts")

It really depends how you drive it and how long over etc on a short drive its very easy to skew it lot one way or another!

I really need to just hire a model 3 and drive to Wanaka to see what my actual driving style is.... With a very cautious partner the days of active driving style are gone.

I've done wanaka Dunedin in my 24kw leaf a couple of times so am intimate with Chargenet.

It's more of a case of not wanting to need to worry about charger availablity when I upgrade to more modern ev

According to A Better Route Planner, if charging to 100% before departing (ok to do with the batteries in the Y) and assuming an efficiency of 180 Wh/km, you’d make that trip ok with 13% remaining. (With 90% charge it suggested a 6 minute charge on the way; I have it set for 10% left at the end of the trip.) See screenshot below.

Totally agree about the boot space - this is why I’ve held out for months waiting for the Y to arrive, as it’s the only BEV that I can afford and that 1. should be able to take all my family’s crap when on holiday; and 2. has the range to be able to do this without too much hassle. At this point, as long as our MY arrives before Xmas we’re planning on using it for a 16-day SI trip, going as far as Fiordland; looks totally do-able…

hmm interesting nearly 50% of WLTP. usually 70% is the ballpark.

watching bjorn's videos one would think that Teslas are among the most efficient EVs if not the most efficient.

though one day i did hear Bjorn explain his data is driving power consumption only, not inclusive of power usage of AC etc

jonathan18:

is that based on real data or estimate?

also summer (30C) or winter (-4C), tailwind or headwind.

also i won't want to be driving a RWD between Dunedin and Wanaka in wintry conditions ...

also if it makes it with 13% you really cannot afford a detour (eg accident and road closure)

finally what is LFP degradation like? that will really eat into the 13%.

you can always find a big truck and draft behind it but these things are few and far between on that route.

The best way to get a good understanding of ABRP (https://abetterrouteplanner.com/) is to have play with it yourself, as it’s free to use both on the web and via the app.

I’ve no practical experience aligning its predictions with ‘reality’, as I don’t currently have an EV capable of a range where it’s useful! But you’ll see there’s a good amount of stuff it takes into account including changes in altitude along the route, condition of battery etc; you can also enter wind, temperature (with the pro version having an auto setting for this) and road conditions (eg snowy). So, like most predictors, it’ll only be good as the stuff you feed it (and, of course, there are many settings to tweak to provide varying degrees of headroom, eg amend the minimum battery upon arrival; decrease the expected efficiency or ambient temperature).

In the end, though, we are talking here about whether it’s feasible in general conditions to do this route without stopping to charge. Of course there may be situations where this is hampered by something like road closures, but if you check this route there are many other chargers along the way that could be used if necessary.

I think one can go too far down the rabbit hole of trying to test a car’s suitability for every single possible worst-case scenario; in the end, I’m comfortable the RWD MY will meet my needs, even if sometimes that requires a change in habits (eg, potential additional stops to charge). Benefits def outweigh the potential issues…
