If my maths is right, that car you mention would use around 2.6 times more fuel than the one in the video. Not such a great saving - but maybe they are different cars. Or my maths is (probably) wrong.

Edit: this 2017 model on Trademe gives a fuel economy listing of 3.8l/100kms, which would roughly work out to just under a litre per 25kms. So I wonder how they worked it out in the video then.

NZ reviewer drove a 2017 on motorways in Japan and saw 5l/100km. The reviewer Reckons the lower figure is urban driving. It does sound very nice to drive and the electric operation superior to conventional hybrid drive systems.

Thanks, that was interesting to read. I'm still keen on one - will have a talk to a dealer and see what range they reckon it can get.

I would hazard a guess newer ones would have better range? Or not necessarily?

I test drove a Nissan eNote yesterday, what a great little car! I think I've made my mind up, definitely going to look at getting one of these. Once I got used to the controls and driving it it was really good.

It was a bit of a learning curve to get used to taking your foot off the accelerator and the car slows almost to a complete stop, but it was still great to drive. Very roomy and comfortable too.

Now if I only had $18,000... 😃

Have a 2017 Note e-Power that I bought from a dealer in December 2020. Can recommend it. Good car, fun to drive.

Although it seems like prices have gone up a lot because I paid less than $13k for it back then (which I though was a bargain for a 3 year old car, although it had a fairly high mileage at the time of 80,000km).

I think second hand car market is quite elevated at the moment due to Covid restricting supplies of new cars. Or maybe dealers are just factoring the clean car discount into their prices.... I guess everyone also wants hybrids now.

How does it go for fuel efficiency and stuff? What's the most distance you can drive before needing to fill up?

the most stupid hybrid. same consumption as non hybrid while costing more and having less power and (very slightly) more weight

It can easily do 900km on a tank and the tanks is fairly small I think, something like 45 litres.

Fuel efficency depends a little on whether it's urban or highway but economy is somewhere in the range of 3-4 L/100km (25-30 km/L).

So Auckland to Wellington would only be one tankful? That's awesome!

After considering many EV and related vehicles I purchased a new 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross VRX PHEV over the weekend. Was at the right pace at the right time and they had one in stock from a cancelled purchase so delivery is Friday. Thought we would be waiting months.

I chose the PHEV  due to my disabilities I need the security of no range anxiety and the PHEV will allow our city driving on pure EV and if the ICE is needed it sips fuelat circa 2 litres of 91 per 100k.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

This is a vehicle that is still on my radar. I’ll be interested to see how you find it, particularly having previously driven the RAV4 hybrid. The only owner I had spoken to had only had the Eclipse Cross PHEV for about a week but spoke very highly of it.

You are not alone with wanting the security of the petrol backup, that’s how my wife feels about it too. Pretty hard to put a value on peace of mind.

Edit: But don’t expect 2l/100km once you start running on petrol. It will be more like 6l/100km because it runs just your RAV does. The 2l figure is the test run figure where they operate on a test track for 100km, in the case of a PHEV that’s 50km on battery and 50km on petrol, hence the unachievably low fuel economy figure (unless you replicate the test conditions).

someone posted that their Mitsubishi PHEV lost 65% battery capacity in 2-3 years.

eventually fought and won their case and got compensation

make sure you know what the warranty states i guess

We won't be fast charging it and it comes with a 8 year battery warranty. We also trade our cars every three years.

This.

Given the quoted efficiency figures for PHEVs I can see why so many have the impression they just about run on fresh air and sunshine.

I totally get the appeal of PHEVs - especially until the promised BEVs with 600-700+km range become common so as to assuage the range anxiety of many - but equally I think it’s unfortunate that those ‘official’ figures are presented as something meaningful. Given the additional weight of the car (more powerful motor and larger battery) of a PHEV (vs a standard hybrid) and still limited battery-only range, real-world consumption will never be anything like achievable.

I’ve posted this previously on the EV thread, but it’s also pertinent to this one:

The lower KMs rate is for when the ICE is acting as a generator to charge the batteries while the electric motors are driving the wheels. The ICE does not have the issues with load and rev variations so is able to achieve very low fuel use.

In the case where the ICE turns the wheels and assisted by the electric motors petrol consumption is considerably higher. If one is using the Mitsubishi system to its best abilities very low fuel consumption averages can be achieved.
