As per afe66, there's a timer override button:

It may be placed in a different button position in your car, but should have a similar symbol. Hold for a couple of seconds, there should be a beep and then will start charging (assuming you've connected to charger).

I'd agree this is the likely cause - it (the need for an over-ride switch) makes sense when you think about it, as the default needs to be the car charges when set to do so by a timer, otherwise it would simply charge when you plugged it in.

This is a classic trap for young players (new owners), and one I recall we fell into after purchasing a Leaf a couple of years ago, and at a free public charger at the local mall - really embarrassing to come out to find the battery hadn't charged at all!

Pardon my ignorance here, but don't the public chargers override the timer settings and start charging instantly, In my extensive 3 days of ownership I have only used public chargers with ChaDemo cords, whereas at home I use the type 1, so is this something i should watch out for at public charge stations? or is it only an issue if you use the type2? public charge stations or i have I just been lucky so far?

Please note this is a genuine query not a snarky remark, I just read my question back and it sounded a tad snarky

I don't use the timers on leaf, but I know for a fact that the 2015 leaf has a 80pc charge shut off which I use at home. I once managed to leave that on when charging at a public fast charger. I needed to get Max charge to make it home, but for the life of me I couldn't get past 80% charge despite repeated attempts.It was a slow drive home and the next day I realised I had the charge limit on.

Long story short the main override settings can effect fast and see charging.

Good point. The charging timer probably only governs the slow charge port and not the chademo.
Otherwise, via the slow port, the source of the charging doesn't matter - the charging timer set on your Leaf will determine whether it accepts the charging.

Totally, the timers don't apply to the fast charging port, and sorry I should have been clearer in my original post.

I imagine I didn't even think about it as we have used a fast charger precisely once in the 20 months we've had the car - it's my wife's 'around car' town, so we get 90% of the charging we need in solely the one hour of free power with EK every day (it's a 16A caravan socket, so more juice in that hour than via a standard plug), with a once-a-week charge to 100%.

@Morgenmuffel - apart from the charging as discussed, how are you finding the car?

Yep I have now got charging figured, the car is good to drive, does seem weird not having a parcel shelf at the back, I have a parcel shelf from an old holden Astra out the back somewhere so might see if that can be adapted, mainly so I don't have to worry about people peering in the boot.

Mine has a parcel shelf that came with the car. But I think that they are an optional extra. If you hunt around you may be able to find one.

Ok 2 quick questions while i remember

1) We are on a low user electricity plan, how much extra electricity (in KWH) gets used by having an electric car (nissan leaf - 60k round trip mainly state highway), (please note there are no free chargers in range) so most charging will be done at home, i'm not sure if our supplier has night rate but will have to check

2) Now that a New leaf is being release in NZ does this mean maps will be available?

Say you're using 5 km/kWh this will be about 12 kWh a day, multiplied by ~20 working days/month ~240 kWh. Say your overnight charge is ~ 20c/kWh, this is about $50/month.

Lots of guesstimates above (and things I haven't taken into account like charging efficiency), but that's my ballpark estimate.

Reset the efficiency counter on dash menu and drive for couple of weeks. Then use that figure along with km driven add a 15% fudge factor for charging inefficiency and you have your answer...

I doubt nissan will sell nz maps to second hand cars. They want you to buy new from them..

My lesf came with parcel shelf. Bit surprised if it's not standard ..

Parcel shelf - no, not standard; I recall reading this around the time we were buying, and so expressly made this a condition of the sale (dealer took it out of another Leaf). Agree it's a stupid thing to exclude.

The 'how much power' question - another thing to do is check your power usage data on your provider's website - if you're charging at night when you're otherwise not using anything else substantial you should get a pretty accurate idea of usage/cost by comparing the same time period before you got the car and now.

Maps - I'm pretty sure I read a post a few weeks ago on this thread that talked about a new upgrade that not only did the Japanese-English translation but also provided local maps. I recall the cost was about the same as we paid for the swapping of the head unit from the original to the US one. Or did I just imagine this post?

$570. I'd have had that done to our LEaf we hadn't already swapped the head unit.
