I recall Meridian offering a plan specifically for EV owners - I think the rates were fairly decent when I looked at it, but it was still cheaper for us to remain with EK (we get our daily car charge done within the hour of free power!).

Electric Kiwi are quite cheap with rates and offer you to choose one free our of power every day.  Super nice via online chat as well, which makes a huge difference!

 

I choose 9pm-10pm to charge my Tesla up every night, so basically I never really have to pay for driving my car! On my single phase, it charges my S75D 9% of the battery in one hour.

Kinda odd at first look. But consider:

 

  • The first RHD Model 3's arrived in NZ this month.
  • The previous display model 3 was LHD and unsuitable for test drives.
  • Tesla operations in NZ have previously only delivered relatively small numbers of model S & X cars.
  • A substantial (hundreds) number of Model 3's destined for customers have arrived in NZ this month.
  • It is assumed that there are substantial numbers (1000+?) deposit holders in NZ, many of whom put their money down in 2016, and some of whom will be waiting for a test drive, or promised options (such as tow hitch) to become available before locking in an order.

In this light, given NZ will only have a very small number of test drive cars, and that staff will be stretched undertaking the initial rush of deliveries, it makes sense that test drives are being prioritised to those who have placed a deposit already.

 

This situation will normalize once the initial rush dies down. Was in Hawaii a few weeks ago, and was offered a model 3 test drive, without being asked by deposit status, and knowing I was from NZ.

Guy even knew NZ metric range and pricing, which I found impressive.

Watched it - it is an outrageously biased and flawed analysis. I would not make financial decisions based on that video.

Just had a quick look at this, and I'm surprised by some of their info...

 

 

 

"Sign up to our Electric Car Plan and we’ll cover the cost of charging your EV for up to a year with a $300 bill credit*."

 

"The year’s free charging has been calculated to be the equivalent of $300. This figure is based on a 2015 Nissan leaf charging overnight with an average travel of 11,500KMs on Meridian’s electric car standard plan."

 

 

 

Can a Leaf really do 11,500KM on $300 worth of electricity?

If one is being generous with the calculations, say 15c per kWh, then $300 = 2000 kWh. At 6km/kWh, 11500km is very do-able.

$0.20 per kwh so 1500kwh from $300.

So 100x100km is 10,000 km from $300.

I know it’s taking it further off topic. But if you then add $70/1000km for road user charges to that $300 you are getting pretty close to what my hybrid costs in petrol ($1144 for 10000km). I find that quite discouraging.

 

Anyway wouldn’t stop me buying a Model 3 if I could afford it. (Back on topic)

Lets say 7km / kWh. So 11,500 / 7 = 1642.85kWh.

I'm paying 16c/kWh with Meridian. So 0.16 * 1642.85 = $262.85.

So they must be assuming a lower level of efficiency. Even at 6.5 km / kWh the total is still $282.

The numbers are very real. An EV charged at home is *vastly* cheaper than a car that uses fossil fuels.
