https://www.whichcar.com.au/reviews/comparisons/2022-tesla-model-y-vs-kia-ev6-comparison-review

"against its 528km claim, the Kia was tracking toward 478kms of real-world range. Meanwhile, the Tesla, with its 455km claim, would run dry at around 334kms."

"Another key factor is efficiency. And with that, the Tesla returned a more favourable figure of 15kWh/100km during assessed running against the Kia’s on-test result of 16.8kWh/100km."

i haven't whipped out the calculator but the 2 sentences seem contradictory

Massive surge on EV's in the wake of the Ukraine invasion, has also slowed as petrol prices have fallen.

I'm not sure that petrol prices have fallen. maybe it's something else

The EV6 has a much larger battery;

Model Y LFP (RWD) about a 52.5kWh Usable battery. (52.5/15) * 100 = 368km

EV6 RWD LR has a 74.0kWh useable battery (77kWh total). (74.0/16.8) *100 = 440km

So the Kia can be both less efficient and have a substantially longer real world range.

Somehow it seems that Tesla has got it's cars to do extremely well in the WLTP cycle, relative to Kia / Hyundai. But can't back up those kind of ranges in the real world.

Personally not to fussed about efficiency with EV's. Power is so cheap it's not a huge deal. So I would take a bigger battery, longer range, less efficient EV given the choice.

But for some buyers efficiency would be more important. Means you get more km/h from AC charging at a set rate, perhaps very important if you are limited to 10A charging at home.

Assume the difference between the range I calculated & the review's projected comes down to things like the below.

  • Rounding errors
  • Possible difference's in how efficiency is calculated. If one car is quoting plug to wheels, and the other car is calculating battery to wheels, the numbers aren't a fair comparison
  • Error in the projection due to car's misrepresenting their state of charge (deliberately or due to the challenges of measuring state of charge)

Tempted to cancel my order with Kia, they provide no confidence they can deal with orders.

I have waited 2 weeks now for an update and yet nothing at all! This is only the pre-order stage, I can only imagine it is worst if your car is in for repair awaiting parts.

This isn't the best service at all.

Sounds frustrating. You would think that the dealership would try their best to give good service to somebody with an order of the second most expensive variant of the most expensive car on the yard.

Especially given that the trim in question has had a $5000 price hike, and got a whole lot more competition since the April order, meaning it will be harder to sell then now, then they were back in April.

On the other hand, we have yet to hit October yet, so you car is not yet late. (But I still think it is resolvable for them to let you know if your car is built or on a ship yet, so you can make arrangements to receive it at your end)

On service, Usually sales & service are completly different departments at dealerships with different people, So I wouldn't read too much into that.

Taking a look on trademe it seems every other trip of the EV6 is available either used or Ex-demo, but not the EARTH AWD you are after. Wonder if for some reason none of that trim came in in the first shipment.

In terms of canceling, I assume you would forfeit your deposit. And new AWD pure EV SUV options are still pretty expensive compared to the cira $95k price you have locked in for the EV6. (Ioniq 5 at $98k - $118k, Model Y performance at $110k, EQB 4 Maatic also $110k, E-tron $170k). And new to the market stuff like the Ford Mach E, ŠKODA ENYAQ iV and Subaru Solterra, are all likely 6+ months away.

I'm finding the same thing - for the same Earth model!!  Ordered it April and received an email 18/8 saying Kia had confirmed arrival in Auckland as part of a significant shipment and that "all going well" it could be here "next week"!!  My latest follow-up with the salesman was yesterday (14/9) and Kia are apparently saying the car is still "in transit" to the dealership (said the same thing a week ago).  Apparently they cannot get any better information out of Kia NZ than "in transit".  They (our local dealer) has had one EV6 delivered and are waiting on 17, including mine.  It is pretty average service from Kia NZ in this day and age IMHO - how hard is it to tell exactly where the car is and how long it will be before delivery, almost a month after the shipment arrived in Auckland!

Have they given you the VIN's?

I don't think it has happened in your guys case (seems the earth trim is very scarce), But there was a situation with another brand of EV a few years back, where a persons order was just about due, then set back a lot. Person got very upset when they found out a high profile media person had taken possession of the same trim / color as they had on order, at they time they had expected the car...

No info on my one at all, so I'm taking their word for it at this stage! But if you see someone driving around in a deep forest green EV6 Earth, let me know 🙂

I'm going to cancel the EARTH and opt for an Air RW LR. The car rebate scheme is too good to give up really. Looking at the specs again and removing the now abated hype, I can live without the extras.

Ok, no stock for AIR RW LR. New cars are 6 months away.

Going to cancel altogether I reckon

I have heard that the estimates are pessimistic. There are occasionally reports of a new batch of EV6 cars being shipped to either NZ or AU, and these move everyone up the waitlist. Might be worth just hanging on for a bit longer?

Are there other models other than the EV6 that interest you?

Now's a pretty decent time to be looking for an EV, given the increasing number of new options available (eg Ssang Yong Korando), and a number not too far off (eg Skoda Enyaq, Ford Mustang Mach E, VW ID4...).

Sticking with the order! It takes a good amount of time for proper research, that has all been done and the EV6 came out tops!

I should look forward to the day it arrives!
