I care what I drive. Thats all that matters.

But you expressed an opinion ("xyz are clearly ladies cars") as if it was accepted fact.
Since the '60s, basically every small-engined convertible, MGs, Triumphs etc have been labelled "hairdresser's cars".
There's an old saying relating to "sports" cars - there are three characteristics - lightweight, powerful, and inexpensive - you can choose any two.
If "powerful" is synonymous with "manly", and affordable is a prerequisite, then you cut down your choices to something which probably isn't very good.
MX5s sold in huge numbers because they were great cars.

I don't think you will ever find a convertible that is not a 'ladies' or 'posers' car, unless you spend lots of $$$ of something exotic and fast. Everytime I see a man in a convertible I think 'mid life crisis'. Get a VW golf GTI or something like that and wind down the windows.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

There's a reason for the "mid-life crisis" label. You don't need to cart rug-rats around any more (woohoo) and simultaneously become aware that life is short.
For whatever merits a Golf GTI may have (quite fast and nice to drive), they're still just a hatchback / shopping basket.

Or go for something old and tough as nails: Land Rover.
Or something really impractical but really fun: Lotus.
Serious classic: BMW 325i M.
Or the Z4.

Old MR2, if you can find a good one now, not too bad. Watch for leaking T tops. Nothing a bit of silicon can't fix though.
Yep, MGF, they badly built, unreliable, limited on parts, expensive to fix, they leak in unexpected places and most of them are basket cases. I currently drive one.

The old mr2 is the best at lift off oversteer. Nothing else beats it at that. Esp when wet.

Not much help to the OP sorry but a suitable thread to show off what the young fella and I toured around in during our US boys trip last year.

And to think the rental was only NZ $52 a day all inclusive.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I actually wonder in many of these discussions around "performance" cars how many of the people expressing opinions have actually driven anything in the "supercar" performance class to anywhere near the limit. I've driven a few - and in my opinion anything capable of accelerating 0-100km/h in sub 5 seconds (which no longer comes even close to "supercar" performance) can be extremely frightening - or at least disconcerting - for passengers - and that in a straight line on a nice clear piece of road. Sub 4 seconds, and IMO it becomes also a potentially very frightening experience for the driver - things can get out-of hand extremely quickly.
I know it's fun - but it is completely pointless for NZ road conditions. Most just end up being driven around the city and countryside at a performance level easily achieved in a small Hyundai.

I have owned 3 previous subaru STIs. They all do sub 5s to the speed limit. Suspension and tyres keeps you alive or kills you. I am not a Lewis Hamilton so I dream of a super car with 4wd and ESP.
